New and Noteworthy: Beirut, Coldplay, Stephen Malkmus, Cults, Washed Out

How about we look at some new available noteworthy songs. Shall we?

Beirut-"East Harlem"
Q1: Has it really been four years since the last full length album from New Mexico indie-Balkan folksters Beirut released their last full length album?
Q2: Can I get something that sounds like the most gorgeous street performers with Zach Condon's swooning vocals being the perfect compliment to the accordions, violins, and flugel horns that populate their songs?
Q3: Can I get something as strong as favorites "In The Mausoleum" or "Sunday Smile" as the first single? I can?

Oh, outstanding. "East Harlem" is the first single from Beirut's upcoming "The Rip Tide" album due out August 30th. I am pretty stoked about it.

Coldplay-"Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall"
Well, Coldplay is back with a song whose title is the biggest, goofy, over the top metaphor I've heard in a song title in quite awhile (But then again, this comes from Chris Martin who reminded us just because he's losing doesn't mean he's lost). Some other BIG METAPHOR titles from the upcoming album are"Us Against The World" and "Hurts Like Heaven" and "Major Minus". I'm blushing. But hey, as long as Brian Eno keeps things interesting with the production, I'll listen, because "Viva La Vida" was actually a pretty good experience for me (much better than X & Y). A date for Coldplay's fifth album has not yet been released but it's expected to be in the autumn sometime.

Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks-"Senator"
Fed up with the "Weiner" scandal or the US government in general? Stephen Malkmus has just the remedy for ya. One of his first songs released from his latest album recorded with his band the Jicks is called "Senator" and talks about what the senator really wants in the chorus. "Mirror Talk" will be Malkmus' first album with the Jicks since his 2008 release "Real Emotional Trash". He's been busy with that old Pavement reunion in the last couple of years but you can enjoy his new material August 23rd (or so that's the due date).

Cults-"Oh My God"
From Bandcamp page to major label record deal in just a year. That's what New York indie duo Cults have accomplished. They've also garnered a lot of praise for their self titled debut album released last Tuesday and rightfully so. Listening to cuts like "Abducted" and "Go Outside" are charming 60's retro pop songs turning on a 45RPM in 2011 with a sugar rush that is right on, not over the top like Sleigh Bells and not underwhelming like Tennis. I may have finally found my two piece sixties bands for the new generation. Here's another one from their debut album called "Oh My God". You'll eat it up quick or overdose on it just as fast, I'm still eating up its trippy beat and am looking for a large pillow to go lay my head down and enjoy the groove.

Washed Out-"Echoes"
Another worthy chillwave artist to take notice of is Ernest Greene's moniker Washed Out who will be releasing his debut album "Within and Without" on July 12th. From the first offering "Eyes Be Closed" and his second song, "Echoes", released just a few days ago, it sounds like Washed Out may offer a bit more dance bumps and grooves than your average chillwave artist and that's always a good thing. Then again just sitting back and chillaxing is always a good thing as well. I guess you're a winner if you're in both those camps with "Echoes" becuase they have both cases covered well. We'll see if the rest of "Within and Without" follows suit next month.
