Love Songs

A few years ago I heard about a band called Minky Starshine & the New Cardinals. You guessed it: I was intrigued by the male lead singer's voice... So, I got the album, enjoyed the music but never really found a good way to approach it. There were after all perhaps too many songs on the album: sixteen in total. Since then Starshine has gone solo.

It took a few more years and a second album to get a hold of Starshine. I slowly began to like the second album Unidentified Hit Record more and more... And I still enjoy it a little bit more each time I hear it. This album has definitely become a classic for me.

What is not to like here? The general production is awesome. There are fantastic drums and guitar, sax, cool piano, harpsichord, even strings, generally very energetic playing. Ken Stringfellow and Mike Musburger play (Ken also sings) on this album which certainly adds some familiar elements to the mix. And of course, Minky's vocals are fantastic.

This is pretty much a love song album. Love shows its bittersweetness and uplifting sides, misery and happiness as the usual counterparts. There are many moments that are just plain beautiful, and other parts are often dominated by a more complicated bittersweetness, that certain feel that isn't all happy or all sad, instead both at the same time.

You could say that Minky likes to use a certain type of hooks a bit too many times on the same album. Now that I have listened to the album probably more than twenty times, I just can't blame Starshine for using such great hooks. Everything comes together like a dream. It is not perfect, but not being perfect is an essential part of making humane music. And even though I don't cherish every song on this album equally much, it is just how the things usually are. If I have to mention a few favorites, I will give you Bitter End, Paper Rain, and of course Brand New.

Yeah, I know I am still one album behind because a third Minky Starshine album (Womanity, 2012) has already been released. I will check it out more carefully when I think it is time. There is also still the first album to explore more deeply.

New 60s Favorites, Part Two

Red with purple flashes. That is how guitarist Eddie Phillips has described the Creation's music. The Creation are my latest 60s favorite number two. This band came from the UK and was founded in 1966. The Creation were a short-lived band but achieved quite a lot during their short period of existing as a band. These achievements were not chart-topping hits but insteadmany excellent mod, garage and psychedelic rock songs that are still living pieces ofsome of the most energetic British music of the era.

Originally I decided to check out this band due to its alleged influence on power popmusic. I had these two compilations, Complete Collection, Vol. 1: Making Time and Vol. 2: Biff Bang Pow, in my possession for some time before the time was right to discover the wonders they contained. These CDs include all music by the band made in the 60s with some different mixes and versions.

I was fascinated by Nightmares from the very beginning. That song is a good example of the certain kind of dark mood that is sometimes present in the Creation's music. I don't know exactly what made it a bit difficult to hear the beauty of this music... Listening to it more was surely the thing that made it open up to me. There is after all a lot to process: a lot of harmonic sound, lots of great songs, lots of different influences.

I have been listening to the first CD more and come to appreciate the stuff very, very much. Everything is solid, well-written and has a pleasant, somewhat heavy garage sound. The combination of melodic British beat music tradition is mixed with rhythm and blues and often psychedelic elements resulting in really impressive, soulful, catchy and memorable music. The mysterious psychedelic feel is also quite enjoyable and there are excellent vocal harmonies.. Check out Making Time, Tom Tom, How Does It Feel to Feel, If I Stay Too Long, All That I Am, the successful single Painter Man, or any other song for the matter! This really is pure kick-ass rocking 60s magic.

The closest counterparts to the Creation are obviously the Who, and perhaps the Kinks. Listening to the Creation can actually momentarily make you feel like you're listening to the Who. The sound can be very similar to the early Who. I think I'll need to dig deeper into this mod music, as well as freakbeat.. and garage.

RhoDeo 1222 Aetix

Hello, Aetix again, Bauhaus became Goth progenitors on acccounnt of their remarkable debut single an hommage to the Hollywood king of the undead..Bela Lugosi, 9 minutes of creepy horror on vinyl set them on a path they probaly never intended, so when they folded in 84, the band that sprang from it's ashes, Love And Rockets build on a very different, big sky almost psychedelic sound. Leaving their former lead singer Murphy behind, they quickly became remarkably successful on both sides of the Atlantic and released a number of well recieved albums in the secend half of the eighties... plenty to enjoy here

xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx

After Bauhaus' breakup, Murphy formed Dali's Car with Japan's Mick Karn and then pursued a solo career. Ash continued with Tones on Tail, a project he began in 1981; Kevin Haskins also joined the band after Bauhaus' split. J made some solo records and joined the Jazz Butcher briefly. After a proposed Bauhaus reunion fell apart because Peter Murphy wasn't interested in the project, as he had embarked on a solo career, Daniel Ash (guitars, saxophone, and vocals), David J (bass and vocals) and Kevin Haskins (drums, synthesizers), came together as Love and Rockets, despite their previous band's status as gothic rock icons, L & R moved away from that genre, as demonstrated by their first minor hit being a cover of the Motown classic "Ball of Confusion," .Their first album release, Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven (1985), leaned more towards psychedelic music and Beatle-esque pop. Rich in sonic detail, the neo-psychedelic Express offers a listening experience like no other album -- guitars spiral to dizzying heights from beds of sound, arrangements swirl, songs change and mutate.  John A. Rivers (who also co-produced Love and Rockets' first album) outdoes himself with the sound on this disc, offering a huge, unique canvas for the band to paint its sound on: crystalline acoustic guitars cut through thick, distorted tones, and the bass is an equal player to the guitars and drums. The 1987 follow up Earth, Sun, Moon had a folkier sound and spawned the minor hit "No New Tale to Tell."

In 1989 the band released a self-titled album that presented a more AOR sound. The second single from the album was the T. Rex-inspired song "So Alive." It became a surprise hit, reaching No. 3 on the American singles chart, After a grueling tour schedule in support of their big hit, Love and Rockets took a few years off concentrating on solo projects before returning to the studio together. The result was a move into a much more electronic sound. Their label, RCA Records, unaware of the UK contemporairy sound, dropped them. L & R signed with Rick Rubin's American Recordings to release Hot Trip To Heaven (1994), followed in 1996 by Sweet F.A.. The albums didn't prove a commercial success, and when Lift came out in 1998 on Red Ant Records it was their last, and the band disbanded in 1999.

With the careers of both Love and Rockets and Peter Murphy at a standstill, Bauhaus re-formed for several live dates in Los Angeles, mounting a full-blown tour in 1998; the two-disc Gotham documented the reunited group's performance at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom. Bauhaus reunited again in 2005, they embarked on a full tour beginning in North America and Mexico in the Autumn of 2005 and ending in Europe in February 2006. In May 2006 the band toured with Nine Inch Nails on the summer leg of their tour. ?Go Away White? was recorded in 18 days at Zircon Skye in Ojai, with singer Peter Murphy, bassist David J, guitarist Daniel Ash, and drummer Kevin Haskins playing together as a band in one room, taking first takes as final cuts. So, a new record but apparently a final one, the band having decided to release it as a posthumous swan song....no news since.

xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx

Though the years have deadened its impact somewhat, there is still a visceral thrill to be drawn from replaying the first Love and Rockets album, a sense of the first step taken towards a brave new world, and a miasmic whirl of psychedelic intent that masks intents even darker than the preceding Bauhaus ever envisioned. Recorded and released in 1985, riding to club acclaim on the back of the "Ball of Confusion" remake, and aligning its makers with a destiny and fame that no one could ever have predicted, Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven ranks among the most deceptive debut albums of the 1980s. The keys to the album remain the same, of course -- the churning guitar soup of "The Dog-End of a Day Gone By," the sibilant glam sexuality of the title track, the chilling nursery rhyme pendulum of "The Game." But the opiate atmosphere that chokes the wide open spaces leavened within every song only thickens by the time you hit the closing acoustics of "Saudade," and Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven emerges as profound an experience as any of the lauded trips of the original psychedelic era. It rounds out the experience with dramatic flair, pinpointing the sheer creativity that was sparking around Love and Rockets at the dawn of their decade-long career.

Rich in sonic detail, the neo-psychedelic Express offers a listening experience like no other album -- guitars spiral to dizzying heights from beds of sound, arrangements swirl, songs change and mutate. "Kundalini Express" typifies Love and Rockets' approach, chugging along for several verses before breaking open and ascending into the heavens; Anglo-fied Eastern religious imagery and philosophy predominate lyrically, and in tandem with the psychedelic music, offer an almost quasi-religious experience. "Yin and Yang the Flower Pot Man" is ecstatically upbeat, offering a propulsive rhythm, flailing guitars, and insistent bass -- a compulsively danceable and bliss-inducing track. "An American Dream," meanwhile, is an anthem of sorts, with distinct sections setting apart the moods of hope, disillusionment, and acceptance.

Love and Rockets' Earth, Sun, Moon reins in the rampant excesses of Express while remaining psychedelic; the near white-out of the cover gives a clue to the music, as many of the songs emerge from a soup of white-noise guitar distortion. Much of the record addresses, in its nebulous fashion, hope and disappointment; the title track and "Youth" are two of their most simple, yet most affecting songs. Not a "normal" pop record by any means, it's more straight-ahead than their previous work and includes the upbeat single "No New Tale to Tell," a college radio hit that set the stage for the band's popular breakthrough a year later.

Attacks on Rand Paul Counterproductive

I'm as big a Ron Paul supporter as the next liberty-minded guy but I have to say that all the negative talk against his son for endorsing Mitt Romney is counterproductive.

Ron has come out and admitted he can't win the nomination. He has urged his supporters to continue to fight the delegate fight and go to Tampa and focus their efforts on such important issues as the Republican platform. The point is that I think Ron has more or less already conceded the election in my opinion.

That being said, what Senator Rand Paul did was not a betrayal of his father. He was not selling out or stabbing the liberty movement in the back. What he has done was an attempt to close the gap between the establishment and the liberty caucuses. I say attempt because it seems his actions have more or less turned the liberty Republicans against him.

I believe that Rand has a bright future in American politics. I believe that his values have not changed. I believe he is still liberty-minded. I believe he has taken this action in endorsing Romney because he knows that, whether we like it or not, the liberty movement must work with the establishment in order to further their cause. Who else would we turn to? The Democrats?

We may not agree with everything the GOP establishment says but we do have some common ground. It is that common ground that I believe we should focus on instead of attacking what could very well be our best hope for a future leader of the national liberty movement within the Republican Party. I believe with his recent actions he has cemented his future in the Party. And I believe that this is a good thing.

Again, whether we like it or not, for this movement to continue, we will need allies in the GOP establishment. I believe that by endorsing Romney he is making an effort to gain allies in that establishment.

So go ahead and keep trash talking Rand Paul if you must but in my opinion he has done more for the liberty movement in this country than you think by endorsing Romney as the GOP's Presidential nominee.

Rob Morsberger - Ghosts Before Breakfast

Rob Morsberger  - Ghosts Before Breakfast
2011, Hieroglyph Records
Rob Morsberger has always had a talent for writing deep-yet quirky pop/rock songs.  His 2010 release, The Chronicle Of A Literal Man, was a musical breath of fresh air bursting upon a world of jaded pop.  Morsberger?s most recent work, Ghost Before Breakfast, takes a darker yet no less enigmatic turn.  The album was written before Morsberger learned that he had inoperable brain cancer, yet listening to the album you?d think that some part of his mind knew something was going on.  The album foreshadows Morsberger?s battle in lucid terms, eking out the faade of beauty and tragedy that is real life.
Ghosts Before Breakfast travels the map, musically, from solid Americana to 1950?s rock to catchy pop tunes.  Kicking off with the title track, Morsberger sets the tone for an upbeat look at the downward slide that is the end of life.  ?Ghosts Before Breakfast? is upbeat, almost jaunty.  In ?The Great Whatever?, Morsberger explores facing the afterlife without concrete faith of belief to hold onto.  There is a gentle exploration going on here, a sort of intellectual curiosity about the spiritual truths of life and death.  ?The Distinguished Thing? is a catchy little rock number that you won?t be able to get out of your head.
Morsberger flaunts his talent for lyrical imagery in ?Cobblestones?, lamenting the one who left him alone.  The easy listening arrangement is a nice contrast to Morsberger?s rough hewn voice.  ?The Wild Wind? has a mellow-Springsteen feel, a solid Americana turn that?s deeper than it first appears.    ?A Man Of Much Merit? is a letter from son to father about impending death, and expressing appreciation for his surroundings and his past.  This one is a heartbreaker ? beautiful and without the expected sense of self-pity.  This is a ?WOW? moment.  ?Celebrity Artist? finds Morsberger turning his prodigious wit on the modern concept of what it means to be a celebrity.  The song is well written and amusing.
It?s into 1950?s style pop/rock for ?For Heaven?s Sake?, and into the 1960?s for the Beatles-esque ?Rocket Science?.  Try to get this one out of your head.  ?Feather In A Stream? is another wow moment for Morsberger, using strings to striking effect to highlight a Zen look at the world to come.  ?Christine In Your Salon? is an ode to a remarkable woman, beautiful in its honesty and simplicity.  Mark that down as a third ?WOW? for Morsberger.
Ghosts Before Breakfast finds Rob Morsberger negotiating impending tragedy with a subtle grace that is inspiring.    It is a subdued work, full of quiet reflections and keen insight, but even here Morsberger doesn?t leave his sense of humor at the door.  Morsberger finds beauty in darkness, bring light to the gloom and doom of impending death, by choosing to focus on the life remaining than the end to come.  Ghosts Before Breakfast is inspiring.

Wilco's "The Whole Love"

Wilco's journey to one of America's premier rock bands has been an unusual one. Rising from the ashes of the seminal alternative country band UNCLE TUPELO, Wilco's Jeff Tweedy has been on a mission to see just how odd and obscure he could make his country twang sound. The first three Wilco records play like more commercial versions of the Tupelo sound. Then came "Yankee Foxtrot Hotel". With "Hotel" Tweedy and his revolving band of musicians began melding the rock sound with spacier elements to create atmospheric epics that featured odd instrumentation and more obscure wordsmithing. This continued with "A Ghost is Born" before a slight return to earth with their last record "Sky Blue Sky."

Wilco's latest record, "The Whole Love" continues to seek a middle ground between the original work and the more grandiose dreams of the more recent output. Opening with the 7 minute clicky "Art of Almost" the listener prepares themselves for another listening foray into the unknown. But Tweedy offers us a curveball with the fuzzy bass driven "I Might" as the second song. "Might" plays off like a vintage 60's rock song. "Sunloathe" seems like something from the BEACH BOYS collection of oddities with it's piano tinkling and soft vocals. "Dawned on Me" revels in it's feedback before settling into a nice rhythm and has the sound of a radio single from the heyday of AM radio. "Black Moon" has a dark acoustic guitar line to lead us through Tweedy's song of searching for truth. "Born Alone" glides along a rat-a-tat drum beat before the guitar picks up the track for the ride. The title track, "The Whole Love", is sunny number about a man who knows he is hard to get along with. "One Sunday Morning (song for Jane Smiley's Boyfriend)", could easily scare a listener off at over 12 minutes but it is well worth the investment. Tweedy sounds like a little Bob Dylan ish here as the song seems to wander around a acoustic guitar until it settles in. The band forsakes any studio trickery and plays it straight. What comes is a jam feeling as if they recorded it on the porch of some old southern home in the last summer.

Wilco's latest doesn't have the ambition of "Hotel" or "Ghost" and in many ways is a nod to their past as Uncle Tupelo. Those hoping for the sonic soundscapes of those records will be a bit disappointed. But those of us who take our music with a sense of authenticity will find the record gaining in stature with every listen.

Bjork's Dark Fairy Tale

I'm not sure anyone could have predicted the type of career BJORK has had. From pixieish lead singer of the dance pop band THE SUGARCUBES to solo club diva to leading lady of the electronic music movement, Bjork has used her unique voice and ear for melody to make her both commercially viable and critical darling all at once. Now on her 8th solo record, "Biophilia" finds Bjork continuing to push her own personal and professional boundaries developing new instruments to get the sounds she wants.

The opening track, "Moon", is a lullaby of sorts to nature that features Bjork's voice meshing with the tinkling of a toy piano. "Thunderbolt" washes a muted beat with synths and strings in a track that recalls her classic "Hyberballad". The single "Crystaline" blows the doors off the record with it's cacophony of beats and drum n bass tempo like something from APHEX TWIN. The middle portion of the record is definitely downtempo, with "Dark Matter" serving as the musical equivalent of walking through the woods on a dark and creepy evening. "Hollow" continues that feel with ominous strings taking the listener through the night before a deep bass line grabs the song and blasts it into the future. I get the feeling that in someone else's hands "Virus" would have been a saccharine  pop song but with Bjork in charge, it's more of a baroque torch song. "Sacrifice" replicates "Crystaline's" slow build to beat heaven trick to lesser success, but I'm sure someone will remix the hell out of it. The record comes to a close with the soft acoustic picking of "Solstice", which is like waking from a very dark dream into the morning light.

Bjork has said the this record is about the combination of nature and technology and although the  record is more images than straight ahead thoughts, one can see the connection. The absence of her old pop hooks makes this a tough listen and will not really garner her any new followers. There are no club stompers here, just musings in the classical and jazz senses. I'm not sure I love this record as much as her others, but fans of hers will no doubt continue to place her on her pedestal as one of the most innovative musicians creating music today.

For those who miss the dancy feel of her early work check out this remix of "Virus" which updates it for the club masses.

The Yardbirds - New York USA 1968

This is The Yardbirds in concert on the 30th March 1968 at the Anderson Theatre, New York, NY, USA and was a soundboard recording.

The notes that accompanied this mp3 version sum up the reason this recording surfaced concisely - This show comes from a rather infamous LP. With the success of Led Zeppelin, Epic decided to cash in on Jimmy Page and so released this LP. The hardcore are familiar with the story - the drums were recorded with a single mic, crowd noise was added with the sound of clinking glasses, etc. The result? Jimmy immediately had the Lp pulled off shelves, but not before some got out. This set is taken directly from the original Epic vinyl. The set includes an early version of Dazed & Confused (here called "I'm Confused"), which includes Keith Relfs original lyrics.

A CD version appeared in Italy in 1990 on a label called Golden Stars and distributed by Red Line, Srl via Trentacoste in Milan, this was probably taken from one of the vinyl recordings.

By 1968 Keith Relf and Jim McCarty wished to pursue a style influenced by folk and classical music while Jimmy Page, at a time when the psychedelic blues-rock of Cream and The Jimi Hendrix Experience was enormously popular, wanted to continue with the kind of "heavy" music for which Led Zeppelin would become famous. Chris Dreja was developing an interest in photography. By March, Relf and McCarty had decided to leave, though the other two managed to persuade them to stay at least for one more American tour. The Yardbirds' final single, recorded in January and released two months later, reflected these divergences. The A-side, "Goodnight Sweet Josephine", was in the same vein as their Mickie Most-produced singles of the previous year, while its B-side, "Think About It" (later covered by Aerosmith on their Night in the Ruts album), featured a proto-Zeppelin Page riff and snippets of the "Dazed" guitar solo. This last single did not even crack the Hot 100.

Wikipedia confirms the issue with Epic Records as follows - A concert and some album tracks were recorded in New York City in March (including the currently unreleased song "Knowing That I'm Losing You", an early version of a track that would be re-recorded by Led Zeppelin as "Tangerine"). All were shelved at the band's request, although once Led Zeppelin were successful Epic tried to release the concert material as Live Yardbirds: Featuring Jimmy Page. The album was quickly withdrawn after Page's lawyers filed an injunction.

On 7th July 1968, the Yardbirds played their final gig at Luton College of Technology in Bedfordshire, England.

The Annual Greatness

The time has come to talk about More Songs About Her, the 2012 release by Secret Powers. It is the band's fifth album ? and the fifth excellent album in a row. Not every band releases five albums this good in (less than) five years! I don't seem to be able to stop listening to these albums anymore...

Compared to What Every Rose Grower Should Know (2011), many songs on the new album seem to have a slightly more serene feel. Still, More Songs About Her rocks just as hard as the band usually does. Secret Powers don't really change their sound: there is nothing to fix as the sound is already perfectly balanced. Shmedly's studio and his fantastic talent as a producer is definitely one of the band's greatest assets. On a Secret Powers album there are always lots of nice additional details that enhance the overall sound. Be it strings, organ, piano or something else, everything is perfectly in its place.

And not only is Shmedly impeccable in the studio, he has once again written about half of the songs and they are all brilliant. Ryan Farley's Running at This Pace is also really catchy, and I especially enjoy him singing Shmedly's Not That Kind of Girl, another song with perfect solo guitar work. John Brownell, the new guy, has provided three songs. Post War with the fantastic Allman Brothers guitars is one of my favorites. Impossible Girl has some real kick, and Carolinetowards the end of the album is a nice slow song with rather disturbing lyrics...

Every other song that I haven't mentioned yet is also great. There are absolutely no weak moments on this album. The obvious highlight is Hard to Be Someone, a supremely sympathetic song that sounds a lot like Shmedly's personal anthem and quite a tribute to his downshifting lifestyle. Superb!

However, Troy Warling is not on this album. I miss Troy...

KL80s is an ultimate six piece PINOY 80's Tribute Band playing music from 80s pop, love songs, dance hits, synth-pop to new wave composed of RICHARD SOTO on Lead Vocals/Guitar/ Percussion, YOHAN on Guitars/Synth/ Vocals, MARC on Drums/Percussion, RALPH on Bass/Vocals, JOMAR on Keyboards/Vocals, and MELAI KATSUMI on Vocals. KUDOS LOVES EIGHTIES plays the music of The Police, Mike Francis, Boomtown Rats, New Order, Violent Femmes, Big Country, and of course The Wild Swans just to name a few. Definitely 80s as the band name stands for. Since these guys will play on REQUIEM's REBEL YELL and will also be the front act on THE WILD SWANS Philippine Concert then I thought of featuring them here in my little blog "The Doctor Is In". I already saw them perform LIVE and definitely I have to say they really play good music and they know their craft very well. I guess the only thing we have to anticipate from this band is an all Original Album which I think would be very interesting. One of the hottest bands indeed right now if you talk about gigs regarding Retro. RICHARD has a great voice and the female vocals of MELAI just adds up to the variety of music that this band can perform. So if you're into 80s music then do check them out KABAYANS so that you'll know what I'm talking about and experience a different type of time travel.

ADV: Taragon Restaurant & Bistro Melaka

Listed as one of the World Heritage City of UNESCO, Melaka is still very much filled with the multi-cultural heritage of the East and West from the 500 years of trading at the Straits of Melaka.

With such diverse culture, it's no suprise for its direct influence on the local delicacies.
Located just across the Stadhuys building, beside the Melaka river is an undiscovered treasure of authentic Nyonya cuisine.

Welcome to Taragon Restaurant & Bistro

Serving a wide selection of sumptious must-try nyonya cuisine, this place also serves some fine Western dishes

To start things off,

A refreshing glass of Tropical Sunset (RM7.90) as we look through the many available mouth-watering dishes in the menu

Taragon Dory Fish (RM16.90). Served with salad and mashed potatoes. Which is good news to my hungry stomach.

Sambal Bendi (RM14)
Might be a tad bit spicy for some, but it's made to 'authentic nyonya style' standards. Sure to satisfy your taste buds.

Chilli Garam Prawns (RM28)
Another one of my favourite, fresh crunchy prawns alongside spicy gravy. Guarantee you'll want more!

The variety of dishes that we ordered

Given such variety, all of it seems to compliment each other in taste which is a major plus to the whole dining experience here.

Finally, for dessert,

Nyonya Cendol (RM3.90)

U ain't tried no Melaka cendol yet, till you've tasted Taragon's very own Nyonya Cendol. Smooth and thoroughly refreshing, it'll leave you wanting more.

private lounge is also available on the upper level that caters to functions with openings that overlooks the river and the scenic hustle in the heart of town.

Good food amidst great ambience and friendly staff, this IS the place to go to complete your Melaka experience!
