Top Music Videos Of The 90's (60-51)

#60 Stone Temple Pilots-Interstate Love Song
1994
Here's where the memory gets a bit hazy. I remember STP's video for being shot in different hues and for Wieland donning a cowboy hat and driving down a dirt road with a feather boa. Taking a trip back in the time machine, I completely forgot about the guy who's running from something while his nose keeps growing through the video. They even brought in a helicopter to chase the guy down. Hey, it's just rock 'n roll, and watching this now, it's clear that this was one of STP's best moments-video and song.

#59 Rage Against The Machine-People Of The Sun
1996
This is one of those watch the unedited version, because the one MTV aired edited out a lot of stuff. The original version deals with the Zapatista Army Of National Liberation's plight in Mexico. Besides Mexican children being shown in a morgue, the most frightening shot is a Mexican worker being buried up to his neck and then trampled on by horses. The version in America back in the nineties rocked as well with the band playing in a small, brick space, but watching the original makes this song speak greater volumes. Not my favorite Rage song or video, ("Sleep Now In The Fire" was in the next decade), but a triumph all the same. What else would you expect from the greatest political statement band of our generation.

#58 Daft Punk-Around The World
1997
Becuase in 1997, what the world needed to add to it's house music was a couple guys dressed in robot suits. And thank you Daft Punk for delivering in spades for one of the most colorful and best choreographed videos of the decade. Mummies, skeletons, synchronized swimmers all moving up and down the platform stage and all representing different instruments and sounds you hear in the song. This was one video that came out where I couldn't turn the channel. Who knew Daft Punk would still be donning those robot suits all these years later.

#57 Travis-Why Does It Always Rain In Me?
1999
Travis had made waves in England with their debut album "Good Feeling" in 1996. Here in the states, it took Fran Healey to look menacing in a kilt chasing other band members through a lush green field to catch America's attention. Lots of great slow motion photography here. The plot involves the band tying up Healey and having him in the trunk of the car, then they go off and poke a dead goat with a stick, then Healey chases them off a cliff and into the water below, where the band climbs up into a floating living room and goes out to sea. It's a brilliant, if odd video, and a great self loathing song. The kicker? It never rains in this video.

#56 U2-One
1992
If U2 went through with the plan to have the video where buffalo were running through a field in black and white be their main video for their biggest "Achtung Baby" triumph "One", it would've been a huge gamble. How much airplay can buffalo get on the ole MTV? Luckily, they knew better, dressed in drag for another version of the video, and then had Bono amongst transvestites for the third version. Any way you look at it, the buffalo version stands bold. And "One", well it's a one of a kind song.

#55 Dee Lite-Groove Is In The Heart
1990
Dee-Groovy! My brother was in town recently to run his first marathon ever. I got to run with him for a few miles until I broke away for the half marathon. I told him to occupy his mind, think of the greatest music video for the nineties while he was out finishing 19 miles. About half an hour after the finish the first song he threw out was "Groove Is In The Heart". And why not. The psychedelic swirl with guest stars Q-Tip, Bootsy Collins and Maceo Parker is a video that always stick in the head of a listener. Well played, Adzilla.

#54 Megadeth-Sweating Bullets
1993
This had to be the inspiration for Michael Keaton's hilarious comedy "Multiplicity". What's that? That movie was more sad than hilarious? Alright. How does a bunch of Dave Mustaines being trapped in an insane asylum sound. Pretty creepy. Throughout the video you watch Dave talk and berate other Dave's in his cell. A great shot is when they go through other cells small windows to show other band members with the same multiplicity problem. So if you're ever stuck in a asylum, and you washing your face, and someone grabs your shoulder, just hope it's another one of you...and not one of five Dave Mustaines. That would be terrifying.

#53 2Pac w/Dr. Dre-California Love
1996
I wouldn't be surprised at all if George Clinton was around in 2095 as an evil tribe leader mumbling about who knows what. One thing I do remember from this video is that Dr. Dre sports an eye patch and the look works well for him. 2Pac succeeded in this mash up, perhaps the greatest rap song tribute to California ever and the video portraying a kind of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome paints a vivid image years after its release. I didn't remember Chris Tucker being in this though. I know too that if I'm around in 2095, I'm going to Oakland to party.

#52 Blink 182-What's My Age Again?
1999
The guys from Blink 182 provided Benny Hill like entertainment for the kids watching MTV in the late nineties. No one knew what these guys were going to be up to next. Their most memorable video in my book is for "What's My Age Again?" as they run around naked everywhere. It's not bad enough they interrupt television shows and such in the process, but they continually flaunt their naked stuff running over people and occasionally bumping into them. If Blink 182 goes down as the band you never thought would grow up, this is the video to prove it. But eventually they did grow up. Then they split up. And they haven't been running around naked for awhile now.

#51 Bjork-All Is Full Of Love
1998
It's really impossible to have a video countdown without a little robot love. Fortunately, Bjork took care of that in 1998 with her video for "All Is Full Of Love". It shows a robot with a face meant to resemble Bjork. What's creepy is the robotic arms prodding her as she looks very mournful throughout. But it all works out in the end. Another robot comes along to show robot Bjork everything will be alright...then they get intimate, the way robots only know how to do, with mechanical arms prodding them in the back. A bizarre but yet gentle and sad video. Bjork had a slew of great ones in the nineties.
