Mississippi (50 Songs For 50 States)

For a long time, I would go into bars and look for "Mississippi Queen" by Mountain on the jukebox. What can I say, I'm a sucker for cowbells and I used to love listening to my dad's Mountain records ("Nantucket Sleighride", that was the bomb) when I was a kid. So when I glanced at the 50 songs for 50 states when I began, I thought I had Mississippi covered.

But after years of listening to Bob Dylan's "Love and Theft", the second album from his later year trilogy which I find remarkably outstanding ("Time Out Of Mind" and "Modern Times" bookend that trilogy), I feel no choice but to put in his song "Mississippi". There is just a current running through it that makes me want to visit a state that always seems down on its luck like the character who settles down in Mississippi for his love a day too long.

Knockout Chorus:
Well I Got Here Following That Southern Star
I Crossed That River Just To Be Where You Are
Only One Things I Did Wrong
Stayed In Mississippi One Day Too Long

It wouldn't be a trip across America without a Dylan song, so Mr. Robert Zimmerman, you get Mississippi, deservedly so.
