Life Analysis: Through Music

It has happened to all of us. You hear a song that takes you back to a specific time and place. Whether it be your childhood, college or an experience that has drastically changed your life, for the good or the bad, you?re transformed back into that moment in time.

Last weekend Monica and I worked from home and she played music from her Gaslight Anthem Pandora station (we?re obsessed with this Jersey band so much so that I think we?ve convinced Farrah to come out to their next show). While some obscure bands came up that we never heard of, I was ecstatic when Jimmy Eat World?s ?A Praise Chorus? came on.

?Are you gonna live your life wonderin? standing in the back lookin? around?
Are you gonna waste your time thinkin? how you?ve grown up or how you missed out?
Things are never gonna be the way you want.
Where?s it gonna get you acting serious?
Things are never gonna be quite what you want.
Even at 25, you gotta start sometime.
?
Someone?s gonna ask you what it?s all about
Stick around nostalgia won?t let you down
Someone?s gonna ask you what it?s all about
Whatcha gonna have to say for yourself??

The Royal Wedding Forces Iggor to Miss Cavalera Conspiracy?s Show in Hollywood Tonight!

Cavalera Conspiracy’s show tonight at the House Of Blues in Hollywood has been thrown a curveball, as drummer Iggor Cavalera will no longer be able to sit behind the kit.  And why you may ask?  Iggor is trapped in London from flight delays caused by none other than the Royal Wedding.  William and Kate really should have considered Iggor while planning.

Fans don’t have to panic, though.  The show will still go on as planned, only now with Sacred Reich’s Greg Hall taking over the drums.  Apparently he had only 24 hours to prepare for the night’s show, but he still wants us to know that, “It will be fine.”

For those of you who can't make it out to tonight's show, you can still get your fill of Cavalera with the band's video below for "Killing Inside" off of their latest album, Blunt Force Trauma:

Texting a Stranger

A couple months ago, Becky and I decided that we text enough to upgrade our plan to include unlimited texting. Before it was 15 cents incoming and outgoing. I still hardly use the feature, but our bill has gone down slightly so it was worth it.

On Saturday, I had the following text message exchange with someone I do not know. Afterwards, I was glad that I wasn't paying for each message.

12:07pm debs boy: Hey what are you doing? This is debs boy
12:08pm Me: You have the wrong number.
12:10pm debs boy: Lol this isn't anne

12:22pm debs boy: Lmao have a great day. And don't take life so seriously dude. You'll never get out alive.Enjoy life, and enjoy the people you meet or talk to out of fate. Peace buddy
12:29pm debs boy: And that wasn't a threat so dont be worried k. Just friendly advice

12:41pm debs boy: Yo what are you up to? Are you planning on rippin out here?

The Triffids

THE TRIFFIDS were an Australian rock band formed in Perth, Western Australia back in 1978 composed of mainstay DAVID McCOMB as singer-songwriter, guitarist, bass guitarist and keyboardist. Other band members were ALAN 'Alsy' MacDONALD on drums, PHIL KAKULAS on guitars and vocals, BYRON SINCLAIR on bass guitar, ANDREW McGOWAN and JULIAN DOUGLAS-SMITH both on guitars. By 1979, Kakulas and Sinclair had left and were replaced by David's older brother, ROBERT McCOMB on violin and guitar, and WILL AKERS on bass guitar and in 1980 MARGARET GILLAR joined on keyboards. There were still a couple of musicians who joined the band which I didn't mentioned already. Dave, Phil and Alsy escaped the heat, boredom and associated water sports by writing songs and recording them. THE TRIFFIDS recorded six self-financed cassettes before releasing any vinyl. They sold the tapes at gigs for a cheap price so that their songs will be heard. Seventy-five songs or so that have existed as magnetized fragments on tiny tapes for over 30 years. THE TRIFFIDS remained as one of Australia's best-loved, post-punk groups. THE TRIFFIDS never really got their music played here in MANILA back in the 80s so the consciousness of PINOY NEW WAVERS about the band didn't really exist. I myself got to know the band only in the late 90s via my cousin and personally as a music enthusiast and music collector I like their kind of sound. THE TRIFFIDS' early beginnings came into form when Alsy and Dave formed the Multimedia Group called "DALSY" back in 1976 and after making remarkable tapes and performing songs about cheese cakes, cats, hotel, gardens, and ruthlessly satirized everything they saw the band split up at the end of 1977 then they reformed as "BLOK MUSIK" in 1978 then transformed into "LOGIC" before being "THE TRIFFIDS". Wheeew!! That's interesting don't you think?

THE TRIFFIDS achieved international success in the 1980s but disbanded in 1989. The band's best known songs are "WIDE OPEN ROAD" and "BURY ME DEEP IN LOVE. The first full length album "The Triffids" ever recorded was called "Treeless Plain" back in 1983. Their very first record for a major label was "Calenture" under Island Records in1986 which opened up many possibilities for the band. Their 1986 album entitled "Born Sandy Devotional" was featured by SBS television in 2007 on the Great Australian Albums series and just last year 2010 it ranked 5th in the book called "The 100 Best Australian Albums" written by Toby Creswell, Craig Mathieson and John O'Donnell. The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) recognized The Triffids' importance on 2008 when they were inducted into their Hall of Fame. Music historian, Ian McFarlane, declared that David McComb was an authoritative singer and accomplished songwriter and that he infused his melancholy songs with stark yet beautiful and uniquely Australian imagery. Few songwriters managed to capture the feeling of isolation and fatalistic sense of despair of the Australian countryside". David McComb died in 1999 from a car collision but his death was mainly due to heroin toxicity and mild acute rejection of his 1996 heart transplant.

"THE TRIFFIDS" "AUSTRALIAN MELODRAMA" is a 19 Track CD Compilation of the band's great works from 1978-1989 which was released by WHITE RECORDS back in 1994. As what was written on the CD "Nineteen Episodes from the Adventures of THE TRIFFIDS". Well, this is my one and only music material from "THE TRIFFIDS" and I find it very concise to learn about the band. If you guys want to know their kind of music I guess better have this CD on your music collection and don't just be contented on mp3 files. The CD Cover is very much related on the Lenten Season here in the Philippines right now. YUP!! The crucifixion cover art was the main reason I made this special blogpost of "THE TRIFFIDS" for "SEMANTA SANTA 2011" and what a way to celebrate Holy Week on "The Doctor Is In" by featuring this TRIFFIDS compilation. Even though the band didn't have any radio exposure here in MANILA back in the 80s, I still believe that if ever their sound were introduced here back then they will be appreciated by fellow PINOY NEW WAVERS too. My personal favorites in the compilation are "RED PONY", "WIDE OPEN ROAD", "BURY ME DEEP IN LOVE", and "GOODBYE LITTLE BOY". I included all four music videos of these songs to spice up this special blogpost of mine about "THE TRIFFIDS". I also made my "AUSTRALIAN MELODRAMA" CD available for download just in case you wanna have a copy. This is only for your listening pleasure okay. All tracks have different flavor that's why you will definitely like each of them. Great music from a great band!! ENJOY THE MUZIC!!

Alice Ripley - Daily Practice, Volume 1

Alice Ripley - Daily Practice, Volume 1
2011, Sh-K-Boom Records

TONY winner Alice Ripley has been acting on and off Broadway for twenty years, as well as recording albums and gigging with her band Ripley and creating works on canvas and in mixed media.  As an artist whose creative energies seem to have no end, Ripley often uses one art form to balance off another.  So it was in 2009, when Ripley played conjoined twin Diana in Next To Normal.  Aside from earning Ripley a TONY for best actress in a musical as well as a Helen Hayes award, Next To Normal left Ripley with another legacy.  Each night Ripley would return to her hotel room and recover from the emotional weight of her performance by singing some of her favorite songs while accompanying herself on acoustic guitar.   These impromptu therapy sessions were memorialized on the album Daily Practice, Volume 1, released earlier this year on Sh-K-Boom Records.

Daily Practice, Volume 1 is raw and unvarnished, featuring Alice Ripley in an almost manic performance state.  The result is unsettling at times, striking at others, and throughout is underscored by the emotional complexities and beauties of the human condition.  Ripley opens with Carole King's "It's Too Late".  This is one of the mellower offerings on the album, but Ripley's vocal performance is impassioned and full of emotion.   "Message In A Bottle" is halting and uncertain at times.  While the original version by the Police seems to focus more on the hope for salvation, Ripley's version seems more focused on the desolation and hopelessness of the narrator's position.  The performance is striking and raw, delivered in the uncomfortable tones of someone who doesn't know what to do next.

"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" is played straight to the letter, but misses the soaring feel of the original in a workman-like performance.  Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know" is slowed down a bit, with Alice Ripley all over the place vocally.  Ripley seems to relish the emotional outbursts of the song, articulating representatives of the FCC's seven deadly words with particular fervor.  "Essence" (Lucinda Williams) displays a particular vulnerability; the emotional charge in Ripley's voice is palpable and real.

Ripley goes all out for Bruce Springsteen's "Thunder Road", capturing the gritty honesty of Springsteen's writing style perfectly.  The sense of hope and joy amidst a dreary world is compelling.  Nanci Griffith's "The Flyer" drips with the loneliness of the road, staying true to the original.  Ripley takes on The Eagles' "Take It Easy" in halting fashion.  It's a solid cover, but doesn't have the carefree feel of the original.  Ripley takes a fair shot at R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts", but sounds overwrought.  The whiney, self-involved nature of the song and the heaviness of Ripley's voice just don't make for a great mix.  Ripley closes on sound footing with a solid cover of Carly Simon's "Anticipation".

Cover albums are always fraught with difficulties for fans and critics alike, but Daily Practice, Volume 1 is not your typical cover album.  The ten songs collected here represent a daily process of catharsis that allowed Ripley to maintain her balance during one of the most trying roles of her career.  The unvarnished nature of the album will give some listeners pause.  This is Alice Ripley, warts and all.  Most artists would never have the audacity to release recording in such a raw state.  From a purely aesthetic standpoint, Daily Practice, Volume 1is raw and unsettling.  Put into perspective, it becomes a statement of freedom, and of that particular beauty that grows from human imperfection and perseverance.  Daily Practice, Volume 1 comes straight from the heart.

Rating: 3.5 Stars (Out of 5)

Alice Ripley's web presence is fleeting and hard to find.  Her blog, aliceripleylinkup.blogspot.com has not been updated in a while, but you can pick up some good information about her there.  The site for her band, Ripley, www.myspace.com/ripleytheband has also not been updated in a while.  Luckily, Daily Practice, Volume 1 is available from Amazon.com as a CD or Download.  The album is also available via iTunes.

Marian Call and her unusual fundraising ideas

We've covered Anchorage, Alaska's Marian Call in the past.  Her albums Vanilla and Got To Fly, with Vanilla ranking as the #1 album on the Wildy's World 2008 Year-end countdown.  Call is getting to release her next album, a two disc collection entitled Something Fierce.  In the process she is running a fundraiser to cover the costs of the release.  A number of neat items are available for direct sale.  You can find the information on her Wordpress Blog.  The really interesting stuff, however, is for auction with a little over 9 hours remaining at press time.  Call is auctioning off three cover songs (you get to name the song), as well as her well-traveled rainstick, hand-written, signed lyrics for two of her songs, and two pieces of custom jewelry from Bella Boutique in Anchorage made specifically for the auction.  You can check out the auction items on Ebay.  Auctions close between 4:00 PM and 12:00PM USEDT on April 22, 2011.

I bring this to your attention for two reasons.  First, to support Call in her fundraising efforts; but also because Call shows real ingenuity in funding her efforts.  Her ideas may be beneficial to other artists who read this blog in planning their own fundraising efforts.  Call has a small but rabid fan base.  The cheapest price for one of the cover songs at press time is over $700, with one already going for $1,000.  Not too shabby.

You can learn more about Marian Call at www.mariancall.com.

The Genius of Mike Batt

Recently, I have been drawn to the Wombles ? again! As I already wrote about a couple of years ago in this blog, The Wombles originally appeared in a series of children's novels by Elisabeth Beresford. These imaginary creatures were also made into a popular TV show in the 70s.

Mike Batt wrote the theme song for the Wombles TV show. After that, Batt made four full albums of Wombles music which became very succesfull. Mike Batt (under the title ?the Wombles?) even ended up spending more weeks on British charts than any other artist in 1974. The attention was well-deserved. Batt's songwriting was very good and his range of musical styles varied from Mozart to surf pop. There were live concerts, performed by professional session musicians wearing Womble costumes. Batt also starred at the concerts playing the role of one of the Womble characters.

Mike Batt doesn't seem to be too enhusiastic about his Wombles music anymore. I read that this is why the gold-selling Wombles albums haven't been re-released on CD. Therefore they will probably not be released anytime soon... Such great bubblegum music would definitely cheer anyone up and be of great value in nostalgic sense... Not to mention how much people of younger generations (such as myself) would enjoy it! Great music for both children and adults... What else do you need?
Update (12/05/10): I'm so happy! They ARE going to be released after all!

Before the Wombles albums come out I'll get myself some of Mike Batt's later solo material... I looked at Batt's musical life story and it was really amazing. He has been all around the world, worked with symphony orchestras and million-selling artists ? written some of their million-selling hits, of course... People seem to think Batt is a very underappreciated songwriter. I wonder if many people in general even have heard about him, considering how much he has achieved. One thing is for sure: writing four albums and eight hit singles for the Wombles doesn't look all that huge anymore when you think about all of the things Batt has done during his life.

But I still love those awesome Wombles tracks. Listen to some!

Jenn Grant Gets Us Good

I'm so happy to see how far East Coast singer-songwriter Jenn Grant has come since her humble beginnings when I'd first saw her live back in 2005. Having already released two terrific albums of alternatingly lush and folky pop confections, 2007's Orchestra for the Moon and 2009's Echoes, Ms. Grant has kept on her current two-year cycle with her just-released new album entitled Honeymoon Punch. I've not yet picked up the album, but the first single is a fun up-tempo, approaching-on-rockin' pop number - the video itself is also pure fun:

Also Jenn is X3's Artist of The Month, for which Jenn and band were filmed for a session of X3's Camera Music, performing acoustic versions of "How I Met You" and "Getcha Good":

Finally, Jenn took part in The Craig Norris Hour on CBC Radio 3, as part of the X3 Artist Co-Host Initiative. Speaking with Mr. Norris from a studio in Halifax, NS he chatted with Jenn then they listened to her new album Honeymoon Punch in its entirety track-by-track, with Jenn offering reflections on each song. Listen to the program below:

Audio: Jenn Grant X3 Artist Interview (The Craig Norris Hour / CBC Radio 3)

Jenn Grant's upcoming tour dates are up at Six Shooter Records. She'll be in Toronto for a show at the Horseshoe Tavern on February 19 with doors at 9 pm and the show starting at 10 pm. I will do my best to be there and you should too.

Bell X1 and the shadow of U2

When you are an Irish band at some point you are going to have to answer the u2 question. Just how much did the four lads from Ireland influence your own work? It's not even a question of if they are an influence, but to what degree. Such is the case with BELL X1 (as it was with SNOW PATROL before them). Even though this three piece is releasing it's fifth album, "Bloodless Coup", most people outside of the Ireland haven't been exposed. The first blush with this new album isn't going to quell the U2 issue much.

The opener, "Hey Anna Lena", takes the now popular drum loop/blip approach that is more RADIOHEAD than U2 even mimicking Thom Yorke's falsetto. But it's with the lead single "Velcro" that the band shift into stadium rocker mode. Awash in synthesizers and bass lines, "Velcro" is an arena pleaser for sure. Singer Paul Noonan's voice bears a striking resemblance to David Byrne especially on the TALKING HEADS-ish "4 Minute Mile". "Sugar High" takes what might be an OMD outtake and updates the sound. Other parts of the record have the band taking a bit funkier outlook on their sound.

It's a risk for sure, but at least the U2 comparison dissipates. Where Snow Patrol has run to the Adult Alternative center with their music, Bell x1 seem to have at least tried to branch out.

New Music Reviews: PJ Harvey-Let England Shake, Akron/Family-S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT

To speak where I am as a PJ Harvey fan, my favorite album is her 2000 release "Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea". The ballads are sweeping, her duet with Thom Yorke, "This Mess We're In" is engaging, the mid-tempo songs were spot on and the rockers "Big Exit" and "The Whores Hustle And The Hustlers Whore" rocked with strong conviction. "Stories" was almost a coming of age, joyful effort. "Harvey In The City". Here we have "Harvey In England...after the disasters of war." Not as fun, but the only comparison I can think of. Harvey is the number one chameleon at her trade. Each album is an album that stands by itself. Repeating herself is not in the vocabulary. In regards to her eight full length "Let England Shake", it's honestly one of her best pieces of work. Other artists would flounder when given the opportunity to narrate an album on what they see in the aftermath of conflict, tragedy and war. Harvey instead revels in the sorrow. The images and mood she paints "Let England shake, weighted down with silent dead" on the leadoff title track or the apocolyptic hoedown of "The Words That Maketh Murder" where Harvey states "I've seen soldiers fall like lumps of meat" give the whole affair a hopeless feel, but her lyrics are the most thought provoking and disturbing she's ever penned.

Musically, "Let England Shake" remains consistent in tone with surprises ringing in here or there. Harvey sings in a higher octave than on past efforts (far from the "50 Ft. Queenie" days) kind of in tune with Joana Newsom or Bjork. And it works as it adds more depth to her narration. The auto harp continues to play a strong role and John Parrish takes up the male counterpart to Harvey's storytelling whether he leads the chant of "Gonna take my problem to the United Nations" from the standard "Summertime Blues" on "Murder" or their best duet on the aching "In The Dark Places". Harvey never puts the petal to the rock metal on anything, which would probably break the mood, but most of the songs still retain a rollicking backbone. Some good mood enhancers are the charging "The Glorious Land" where a bugle horn playing the "Regimental March" arrives literally out of nowhere off tempo and the sudden rush of guitars on the short but effective "Bitter Branches". A couple of the slower pieces "Hanging On The Wire" or "England" kind of fail to keep up with the moodier pieces that populate the rest of the album, but they're not stones. They're brief reprises from the horrors of young men hiding in the dirt, with guns, in dark places.

This is the soundtrack for the aftermath of the apocalypse and horribly ironic in the wake of what happened in Japan last Friday. It's pretty eerie slipping this on with a bit of uncertainty in the air with the aftermath going on right now. As the background chant of "Fire" and "Let it burn" repeat over and over during "Written On The Forehead", Harvey hits you in the gut portraying life after similar tragedies that have unfolded recently. "People throw belongings, a lifetime's earnings amongst the scattered rubbish and suitcases on the sidewalk." A gut-check album in every way and Harvey's most reflective and unsettling piece of work is a keeper for it's impeccable songcraft. It's easily near the top of her discography.

Grade: A-

JHO Picks:
The Glorious Land
The Words That Maketh Murder
In The Dark Places
Written On The Forehead

___________________________________________________________________________________
Moving further away from the folk sound that the band started with years ago, the full on direction to more of prog-rock style is almost in full swing on Akron/Family's latest album "S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT". Composed in a cabin near a volcano in Japan (hence the outstanding album cover which I'll get more to in a bit), the songs here range from furied prog goodness to provocative lullabies. When songs pick up on the energy, they sound bold and fresh. Opener "Silly Bears" and the wonderful gush of "Another Sky" simply soar along on unbridled energy and complex, optimistic vibes. They try their hand to good use on a slick guitar riff that sounds like the roughed up drunken brother of Squeeze's "Black Coffee In Bed" on "So It Goes" and it's cool and collected attitude works. And with lyrics like "I stopped giving my change to all the homeless people out on the street/ but I changed back/ I give my change again/ to anyone who asks so long as I have a pocket", it shows the band still retain a nice sense of humor in their demeanor. Lighthearted and polite. I mean, you're not gonna take a band inquiring "Where did you get that honey, so sweet, silly bear" that literal right? So some upbeat songs work wonders here.

The more hushed approach on the precious "Island" and "Cast A Net" work spiritual spiderwebs as well. On "Island", an almost peaceful, tropical feel fills your speakers with muted slide guitars, pretty vocals, and lyrics about wanting to be on an island off Mexico. Even better is "Cast A Net" which works off a simply gorgeous, silent guitar refrain and some pitch perfect harmonies. But by the last three songs on the album, the quieter songs ("Canopy" and "Creator" especially) fail to leave much of a lasting impression, nothing on par with "Island" or "Cast A Net". And on two more buoyant efforts "Say What You Want To" and "Fuji I (Global Dub)", the prog tendencies tend to go overboard from rushing excitement to well...I think the tribal, overdubbed vocals culminating into a bomb sound (or is that a volcano exploding and bubbling over/who knows?) on "Fuji I" pretty much show a bit of an overstuffed turkey.

So "S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT" is worth a journey through, even if it is a wildly uneven effort and may be better to pick the songs you like the most and leave the other ones buried in volcanic ash. It's another smart album from their arsenal and will leave dedicated fans satisfied. Speaking of that album cover, the volcano spewing lava, the first thing I thought was they should have a dinosaur in there. Really. This could be a soundtrack for a Broadway production of Sid and Marty Kroft's "Land Of The Lost". But then, the lyrical matter of the album swims in present tense activities. So the real question "S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT" poses is "Are we living in the land of the lost today?"

Julie The Band - Wild As The Sky [EP]

Julie The Band - Wild As The Sky [EP]
2010, Baby Bird Records

When lead vocalist Nathan Blumenfeld-James and lead guitarist Dustin Bath met in high school they didn't have any idea that they might still be making music together a decade later.  The Los Angeles natives began a partnership that has continued to prosper over the years, and eventually grew into a band with the addition of Jon Spence and Nick Adams in 2009.  The band's debut album, An Act Of Communication, was full of witty song writing and pop structures, and won the band rave reviews from regional and national outlets.  In 2010, Julie The Band returned with the six-song EP, Wild As The Sky, maintaining the basic personality the band had established with their debut, but sliding more fully into an Americana influenced-sound.

Wild As The Sky opens with "Working For The Wind", a catchy mix of Americana and rock n roll.  Blumenfeld-Jones carries the day, but Julie The Band is as tight as can be behind him.  The chorus is the gotcha moment here, built on a great hook and filled to the brim with dynamic vocal harmonies and enough guitar fill to complete the sound.  The song is all about making your way through the world without getting caught up in earthly details.  "Memories In My Head" recalls a romantic interlude from years before that's been etched into memory for all time.  It's almost a lucid moment amidst memory, and is an amazing piece of songwriting.

"Wild As The Sky" is another retrospective, thinking back to the carefree days of youth when the world around you is all you see.  The gentle country/folk arrangement is appealing, and seals the connection with the listener.  "Big Boned" is an interesting love song about the long haul.  Good hearted and sweet, with an under-current of humor, Julie The Band seems to embrace reality in lines like, "When my time comes and that curtain closes / and my eyes don't shine like they used to / forget all that stuff, I just hope I said this enough / I love you."  "Perfect Match" is another sweet little love song done up in a nice, simple arrangement.  This one is pure mix-tape material.  Wild As The Sky closes with "Free As A Cowboy", an ode to walking away from the minutiae of the every day and into a life of freedom.  Peace and anger mix in interesting measure in a tune that runs much deeper in motivation than it at first seems.

Julie The Band remakes itself on Wild As The Sky without losing their essential approach to songwriting.  Early returns suggest that this is a serious band with a light heart that will continue to grow musically as long as they are together.  Don't be surprised if Julie The Band continues to make albums that don't sound much at all like things they've done before.  Even for a six song EP, Wild As The Sky is ambitious and brave.  Even when Julie The Band doesn't fully connect, they get enough of your attention to keep you interested.  As time goes on, they're only going to get better at making that connection.

Rating: 3.5 Stars (Out of 5)

The Wedding Present Hello Operator McCarthy Gentleman Reg

RhoDeo 1116 Roots

Hello, last week we were left at the crossroads of our human civilisation, the middle east. A fertile sphere to be inspired by the other. Collaborations is the inevetable outcome for the new generations of aspiring artists, if not in music but perhaps in style of presenting. Baba Zula choose a well known dubmusic professor called Mad to master and mix their album, it does lift them from anonimity even if his influence isn't that present. The Vadhat sisters not being alowed to perform publicly were picked up by a Norwegian who opened the doors to the west for their singing. Great album here, finally two musicians whose path crossed in an unlikely place so they made the best of it...

xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx

Baba Zula follows a musical compass to Turkish musical roots going as far back as pre-Islamic, shamanic times, through Anatolia reaches all the way up to present-day Istanbul. Despite sounds that might initially come to mind when one hears the phrase "Oriental Dub", Baba Zula's music is in fact rock'n roll that rolls in a way that westerners have not heard since the late 1960s rock epoch. Baba Zula share their legacy with us through their music, a music born out of Istanbul and influenced by the memories of Istanbul passed on to them from generations past.

The band was founded in Istanbul in 1996, featuring founding members Levent Akman and Murat Ertel as well as Co?ar Kam? who replaced original member Emre Onel in 2005. BaBa Zula added live drawing artist Ceren Oykut into the mix in 2004. Her presence onstage has added an important visual aspect to BaBa Zula's live performances. They go to great lengths to provide their fans with a unique live show experience. Their ritual-like performances are a mixture of disciplines of art, often featuring belly dancers, elaborate costumes, poetry, theatre and live animation, delivering viewers a tantalizing audio-visual feast.

Baba Zula's debut album, Tabutta Rovasata (Sommersault in the Coffin), is the original music score for Dervis Zaim's first movie of the same name released in 1996, The album also includes four songs on which the movie's stars Ahmet Ugurlu, Tuncel Kurtiz and Aysel Aydemir contribute vocals. Baba Zula's album Three Plays from Seventeen pieces (Doublemoon Records) comprising music created for the plays The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupry, Frog Tales by Arnold Lobel and Kitchen Accidents by Perihan Ma?den, was released in 1999. Along with a number of other artists, Ralph Carney, Brenna McCrimmon and Selim Sesler also took part in this album as guest stars. Baba Zula also made the music for the film Renkli Trke (Colored and in Turkish), directed by Ahmet Cad?rc?.

Their third album Psychebelly Dance Music, released in May 2003, was mixed and mastered by the British musician and producer Mad Professor, who previously worked with Massive Attack, The Orb and Lee Perry. Their fourth album Duble Oryantal, which was released on Doublemoon Records in May 2005, reunited them with mix-master Mad Professor, Sly & Robbie and Alexander Hacke and reflects the culmination of years of fearless musical adventuring, and as usual there is a talented and eclectic supporting cast. On the 2007 release Roots, Baba Zula return to their original format as a trio. Traditional Turkish influences on the album include works by important composers and lyricists in the history of Turkish music, such as Ne?et Erta? and Pir Sultan Abdal as well as analog recording techniques courtesy of Turkish producer Mehmet Ate?.

Who can stop Eve from singing ?

Born in Tehran in 1973, Mahsa Vahdat started her career in music by taking piano lessons of Minoo Mohebbi from an early age. She continued the piano with Laleh Aghevli. She picked up Persian traditional singing with Pari Maleki and continued singing with Mehdi Fallah and Mohsen Keramati. Vahdat also plays the setar which she studied under Ramin Kakavand and later Masoud Shoari. She entered the Art University in Tehran in 1993 and graduated from the Music Faculty with a BA in Music. In the Art University she has been under the influence of master musicians such as Sharif Lotfi, Ahmad Pejman, Hooshang Zarif, Behnam Vadani, Abdorreza Sajadi, Hushang Kamkar, and Mohammad Reza Darvishi.

A new work by Iranian sisters Mahsa and Marjan Vahdat is a step away from the more contemporary collaboration they made in 2007 with Norwegian musicians. After this fruitful cooperation with Knut Reiersrud they decided that this time around, they'd work with Iranian musicians playing ney, setar, bass, synth, oud, doudouk, kamancha, daf and other percussion), and with the composer, arranger and producer Atabak Elyasi. ).

The front page of the CD shows a more than 4000 years old woman figure from Iran, and together with the title ?I am Eve? and the strong poetic power that fills the whole record, it strikes a tone of woman power which has the weight of thousands of years and makes the oppressing doctrines of present Iran a parenthesis of history. The music on the record is more meditating and less experimental than ?Songs from a Persian Garden?. But it still takes brave steps to renew the Persian tradition, both harmonically and in terms of sound. First of all, it brings power and beauty, and it is carried by fantastic vocal works and delicate and interesting arrangements.

?I am Eve? has melodic elements born from Persian classical tradition, shaped by the Vahdat sisters. The poems are written by contemporary poets in Iran like Azar Khajavi and Layegh Shir Ali and by classical poets like Rumi and Baba Taher. Among the musicians are Pasha Hanjani and Amir Eslami (ney), Shervin Mohajer (kamancha), Shahram Gholami (oud), Ali Razmi and Atabak Elyasi (setar), Reza Asgarzadeh (doudouk), Babak Riahipour (bass), Ali Rahimi (daf and percussion).

Since Lullabies from the Axis of Evil followed by Risheh dar khak (Roots in the Ground)~The composer of this album is Pejman Taheri and its publisher Ava-ye Barbad. Compositions strive to find a new language that combines classical Persian music with new poetic forms. The latest Album "Scent of Reunion" ( Love duets across civilications) was released in 2009

After the Islamic Revolution in 1979 in Iran, the female voice was banned in public and even some years after the revolution female singers can only perform for women only audiences or alongside a male voice. She can never perform solo in public; a process of elimination of the female voice in the performing cultural heritage in Iran. But many female singers in Iran have continued singing regardless, as have sisters Mahsa and Marjan Mahdat, who give private concerts in Iran but mostly perform outside of the country.

Their repertoire is inspired by regional and traditional music from Iran with their own musical expression; their lyrics are
mostly mystical and love poems from great Persian poets like Hafez, Rumi, Saadi from several centuries ago, as well as
contemporary Iranian poetry speaking about Iranian society. An active campaigner for human rights, Mahsa gives numerous benefit concerts and, with Marjan, is also one of the ambassadors of Freemuse, an independent international organisation advocating freedom of expression for musicians and composers worldwide.

Btw t an excellent booklet with the translated poetery comes with it.

Zhubin Kalhor was born in 1980 from Iranian parents, he started his musical journey at the age of 14, when he started learning to play Daf (the framedrum) and Kamanche (the Iranian fidel) with the famous Iranian master Ardeshir Kamkar. After having played Persian classical music (radiff) with various masters, he left Iran and settled in Pune, India where he met musicians from all over the world. Years of playing with musicians trained in different background, like classic Indian, Jazz and Blues, Turkish, Arabic etc. gave Zhubin the opportunity to experiment and find his unique style.

But to him music is not only a matter of style. It?s about transforming spirituality and the mysteries of life into chemistry with the listener. The last 5 years Zhubin has performed solo and with various bands in concerts and festivals all over the world, among others with Bahramji, Ahura, Barbad, Pecheurs de Perles, Prem Joshua and the Mystics of Sound and Hawa.

Rajkumar Bikramjit Singh was born into the Royal family of Rajkumar Roton Singh and Yaimabi Devi in the town of Imphal in Manipur februari 65. In 1974 tragedy struck this self confident 8-year old. An accident left him incapacitated for over a year. Bikram was under closely monitored medical treatment for multiple fractures which he endured after falling off a tree. The shadow cast over young Bikramjit?s misfortune, prompted his father to gift him with his first flute whiles he convalesced. All that persistent practise paid off: Bikram was just thirteen years old when he started accompanying singers and other musicians on tours. He played for (AIR) All India Radio that year with some established radio performers. But his real reckoning came when he moved to Pune to pursue higher studies.

In 1989, Bikram moved to Pune to complete his masters in Archaeology followed by a Ph.D in 1992. However, pretty soon his academic pursuits came to a halt as Bikram dove passionately to pursue his musical career. He met fellow 'outcast' Zhubin there and discovered their shared spirituality easily overcame the 15 year generation gap and so together they released Himalay.

Their music blends ranging from Iran to India, a carpet weaving are the Northeast. Artist's compositions, where the two partners ranging from local to global album, relaxing at the peak of the Himalaya Mountains as a break in life. Misty mountains, the villages along the shores of rivers that pour, delicate anklets tinkle in the morning to the sound of the awakening of the image with the full album. Zagros'un mountains, the valleys of the passage, from the plains of the Himalayas extending the music's poetry breathe Zhubin and Singh.
