Cabaret Voltaire - Paradiso, Amsterdam 1983

This is Cabaret Voltaire live in concert at the excellent Paradiso concert venue in Amsterdam, Holland back on the 9th December 1983.

The band initially composed of Stephen Mallinder, Richard H. Kirk and Chris Watson, the group was named after the Cabaret Voltaire, a nightclub in Zurich, Switzerland that was a centre for the early Dada movement.

Their earliest performances were dada-influenced performance art, but Cabaret Voltaire later developed into one of the most prolific and important groups to blend pop with dance music, techno, dub, house and experimental electronic music.

The band formed in Sheffield in 1973 and experimented widely with sound creation and processing. These early experiments are documented on the triple album CD set Methodology (Mute 2002). They eventually turned to live performance, often sharing the bill with Joy Division. In one incident, Mallinder was hospitalised with a chipped backbone after the band had objects thrown at them. However the arrival of punk rock brought a more accepting audience for their industrial, electronic sound and they were championed by Sheffield punk fanzine Gunrubber edited by Paul Bower of local band 2.3.

In 1978, Cabaret Voltaire signed to Rough Trade Records. With Rough Trade they released several acclaimed musically experimental singles and EPs, including Extended Play, "Nag Nag Nag" and "Three Mantras", and albums such as The Voice of America in 1980, and Red Mecca in 1981.

During this time they toured Europe, Japan and America without major record label support, releasing Hai!, a live album recorded in Japan, in 1982.

In 1983, coinciding with the departure of Watson (who went on to found The Hafler Trio with Andrew M. McKenzie before becoming a BBC sound engineer and then a soloist), Cabaret Voltaire decided consciously to turn in a more commercial direction, with the album The Crackdown on Some Bizarre / Virgin Records. This decision was rewarded with the album reaching number 31 in the UK Albums Chart - over 60 places higher than their previous (and then only) chart placing. In 1984, the singles "Sensoria" and "James Brown" from the album Micro Phonies (also on Virgin) charted on the UK Indie Chart, as well as getting play in the underground dance scene.

High on Fire - Death Is This Communion

With the release of their new album, High on Fire appears poised to become the next, but not necessarily new standard of mainstream heavy metal; a sort of post-Pantera return to the pre-Opeth age. Whatever its faults, they are preferable to the many sagging, shabby and vigor-less stand-ins on store shelves today. Though as many voices scoffed at as did praise 2005?s Blessed Black Wings, that album and its successor represent a needed turn back toward a more accessible kind of metal that is unapologetic?and plainly?still has some balls. In this case, nine of them.

It seems like an unlikely position for guitarist/songwriter Matt Pike, the former wizard behind the simmering, clam-baked jams of stoner rock behemoth Sleep, but over the last several years High on Fire has gradually cultivated, and here fully developed a faster and more aggressive style similar to later-period Slayer (?Fury Whip?) and pre-Derrick Green Sepultura (?Waste of Tiamat,? ?Turk?) with the essential influences of Motorhead (?Rumors of War?) and St. Vitus still pumping below the music?s layers of bloodied thew and gristle.

Whereas the former groups eventually fell back on rote antipathy or attempts at pale authenticity by molding native culture around modern trends, High on Fire carefully blend fantasy in with realty, finding the needed balance to maintain their portrait of barbaric, Howardian landscapes (once more vividly articulated by artist Arik Roper) and allusions to Lovecraft?s Cthulu mythos in ways relevant to the present?where truly nothing is too strange?without the preachiness that?s soured the best of more recognized acts from Metallica onward.

Where the album lacks subtlety it more than compensates with its tightly reigned in performances. And although Pike?s sense of melody and grizzled howls (here brought much further into the mix by producer John Endino) are the heart of Death is This Communion, it?s the titanic sound of drummer Des Kensel that give the monster its hundred legs to stand on. Varied by touches of mid-eastern music on the instrumental ?Khanrad?s wall;? the almost literally acted out tribal concussions of Kensel?s ?Headhunter? drum solo; the epic crush of ?DII,? and a pair of non-sequitur space-rock jams inserted later on, the album is fairly strategic in the amount of ground it covers, at times majestically so. But it never strays from its center of power and force while spiraling inward toward that common terminus, with grace accomplished.

Earth Search 1013

Hello, now the Xmas bonanza has settled and digested it's time to continue the quest..

The Setting

Some years before the story opens, the huge Earth starship Challenger, on a mission to find Earth-like planets for colonization, encountered a meteoroid shower that killed all of the adult crew and seriously damaged the ship. The only human survivors were four babies - two boys, Telson and Darv, and two girls, Sharna and Astra. The four have been raised from childhood by androids and tutored by two disembodied voices called Angel One and Angel Two.

At the end of Earthsearch, the crew of the starship Challenger settled on the Paradise planet, having never seen their original home planet that they called Earth. They left the Challenger's control computers, Angel One and Angel Two, in charge of the ship to continue the search for Earth. Four years later, the crew have settled into their life on Paradise, despite many hardships they are suffering. Then suddenly, one of their children is killed by a 'monster' that appeared from the sea.

It transpires that this 'monster' is actually an android from the Challenger, which has returned. When the sea level begins to rise, the crew are suspicious of the Angels. They notice a large amount of radiation coming from the southern horizon, and they fly to Antarctica in their shuttlecraft. There they find hundreds of towers embedded in the ice. The Angels are using terraforming equipment from the Challenger to melt the ice and thus raise the sea level in an attempt to get the crew to rejoin them on the ship. The crew are adamant that they will not leave Paradise. The flood gets worse and worse, and will clearly soon submerge all the land. They load breeding pairs of animals into the shuttle cargo bay, and when the water level gets high enough, the shuttle floats. The crew are surviving, barely, and have beaten the Angels for the time being

NU 107 Closing Time?

It has been 23 years since I was able to first catch the test broadcast of NU107. YUP!! My memory is still crystal clear that It was exactly November 1, 1987 when I first caught the radio signal of DWNU 107.5 and this was on my way to the cemetery on UNDAS time. This was 5 months after Legendary WXB 102 wave goodbye to their listeners, and now after two decades "The Home Of New Rock" or "The Home Of NU Rock" is bidding farewell this coming November 7 ,2010. It's been all over the news for the past weeks and confirmation will definitely be given once the station closes down and rumours of a format change are indeed very loud. Hmmmp? A pop radio-format "Pang Masa Station" would replace the current Rock Radio format. Although I don't usually listen to the station that much nowadays comparing back in the late 80s and early 90s, I'm still saddened by this news since It has become a very influencial radio station for a lot of generations. From NEW WAVE, MODERN ROCK, ALTERNATIVE, and other forms of Rock Music. So what will happen to "BALLAD OF THE TIMES" radio show? YUP!! Tonight is their last episode so better tune in okay. I have some memories of visiting the radio station a couple of times on different locations since I was able to win some prizes back then and have watched some benefit gigs too. I'll try to feature them here in my little blog "The Doctor Is In" in the future. Last October 29, 2010 , NU107 held their last NU107 ROCK AWARDS 2010. Since I have featured the NU107 Rock Awards from year 2007 to 2009 then we will be featuring it too here in my little blog. So I guess that's it for today's blogpost so better listen to the last NU107 Home Of NU Rock Broadcast on November 7, 2010. Bye Bye to the Home Of NU Rock DWNU FM 107 dot 5, loud and proud member of the K.B.P.!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH NU107 for the music!!

Disturbed - Ten Thousand Fists (2005)

Ahhh, that hits the spot! Much like a hot cup of Kona Coffee, this album gets right on top of ya, gets the job done. Not full of flavor, but just the thing when there are zombies to kill. Ok, so I haven't actually found any zombies hell-bent on gnawing out my carotid artery to kill, but when I do... this will be the soundtrack. Don't get me wrong, I know good metal and this ain't it, but... I like it all the same. Much like Zombie's "La Sexorcisto," it's won me over, despite the metal-purist in me. I don't care what you call it either... it gets right on top of my owie. If you want something more authentic and original listen to Big Black, Helmet, or Finch.... and shut your pie-hole.

The Story of a French Maestro on Silver Screen

This actually happened a couple of weeks ago, but I still want to mention this film I went to see: Gainsbourg. It is not just any music film, you see. It is a 2010 film about Serge Gainsbourg, the great French composer, singer, poet, actor... whose music I haven't been paying much attention to even though it is obviously great stuff.

The film was really entertaining and well-made. The acting was good, and I enjoyed the unconventional way of describing Gainsbourg's inner self. The plot followed Gainsbourg's life story nicely, concentrating on the main character's personality, scandalous love life (obviously), and the way he developed his visionary music. In my opinion, the makers of this film could have highlighted the music part a lot more but I enjoyed it like this as well. I am endlessly curious about how musicians get their inspiration, how they work on their music, and so on. That is why I probably couldn't be satisfied with a film about a musician if it didn't include (preferably a lot of) stuff about making music.

I don't often see films about musicians. That is why there aren't many film reviews/commentaries in this blog. I would love to see films about musicians more often ? and not just documentaries! The strange part is that I actually found out about Serge Gainsbourg while doing research on a power pop musician years ago. Good thing, and now I think I should finally start listening to the maestro's work!

The Tourists - London 1980

This is The Tourists who came in to being from 1977 through to 1980. The band, are now better known for two of their members Annie Lennox and David Stewart who went on to achieve great success as Eurythmics. The band formed around a nucleus of two musicians from Sunderland in north-east England, Peet Coombes and Dave Stewart.

Peet Coombes was a guitarist singer-songwriter, while Dave Stewart, also a guitarist, had been a member of the folk rock band, Longdancer, who were signed to Elton John's Rocket Records label. The two moved to London and encountered Scottish singer Annie Lennox who had dropped out of her course at the Royal Academy of Music, where she had been studying flute and keyboards, to pursue her ambitions in pop music. The three of them initially called themselves The Catch, and released a single "Borderline" in 1977 on Logo Records, which failed to chart.

By 1977, they had recruited bass guitarist Eddie Chin and drummer Jim Toomey, and rechristened themselves The Tourists. This saw the beginning of a productive two years for the band and they recorded three albums: The Tourists, Reality Effect, and Luminous Basement, as well as half a dozen singles, including "Blind Among the Flower" (1979), "The Loneliest Man in the World" (1979), "Don't Say I Told You So" (1980), and two major hits, the Dusty Springfield cover "I Only Want to Be with You" (1979) and "So Good to Be Back Home Again" (1980), both of which reached the top 10 in the UK. "I Only Want to Be With You" was also a top 10 hit in Australia, and made the US Billboard Hot 100 at no.83. Coombes was the band's main songwriter, although later releases saw the first compositions by Lennox and Stewart. The band's music expanded using their folk roots, demonstrating some punk energy, reggae and 1960s pop influences. A key development was their decision to record later material with German avant-garde producer Conny Plank, and a transfer to RCA Records in 1980. The band toured extensively in the UK and abroad, including a support role on the Roxy Music Manifesto Tour.

They disbanded not long after this concert performance recorded for the BBC at the Paris Theatre, London in 1980.

I Forgot How Much I Love Counting Crows

Some bands come and go in your musical conscience. Bands that were once staples of your play lists (or mix tapes if your my age), seem to vanish and are replaced by newer bands with fresher sounds. It's the nature of our listening tastes. Those of us who enjoy the collective nature of music are always looking for the next great sound. But then something happens to remind you why you fell in love with a band in the first place.

COUNTING CROWS will always be the band of my early 20's. I was first exposed to them in college (I can remember digging out "August and Everything After" out of a stack of CD's with my friend Scott, pressing play and being in awe from the first strum of the guitar) and stayed with the band throughout my post college wanderings through the music industry. They were not an especially cool band (often thrown in with THE GIN BLOSSOMS and DAVE MATTHEWS BAND) but had a certain level of success to the point where they are still alive and kicking to this day. I have dutifully purchased all their albums but over time their place on the old iPod has dwindled to just a few songs.

But last night they were rocketed back into my listening galaxy. I went to a special screening of Adam's new movie FREELOADERS (which unfortunately was not very good). Following the movie my wife and I thought the band might play a song or two. Instead the boys brought an hour long set of songs mostly from their second album "Recovering the Satellites", which I personally feel is their best. Duritz still knows how to work a crowd with his speak sing approach to his singing. The band was tight and sounded great. To the best of my recollection the set was as follows:

Catapult
Mrs Potter's Lullaby
Mr. Jones
Goodnight Elisabeth
Angels of The Silences
Hard Candy
Friend of the Devil
Recovering the Satellites
Miami
A Long December

(there may be a song missing but I didn't jot it down like I normally do)

I couldn't resist playing their music throughout the day. It's earnest and true. It's pop and rock and classic in its structure. It is not ashamed to be lovelorn and simple in places. It is the very definition of classic rock and roll and it's brilliant. There was a time I was embarrassed for liking the Crows (they are about as un-indie as you can get), but that's in the past. I love this band and always will. And that is what being a fan is all about...

**Still a great pop song about wanting to be a rock star. I cannot tell you how many times I have sung this in the car at the top of my lungs. You should to, you will feel better for it.

Alana Grace ? With One Word

Alana Grace ? With One Word
2009, Fragile Heart Records
Alana Grace is a wunderkind.  The singer, songwriter and working actress shows incredibly depth for her twenty years.  Based in Los Angeles, Grace came to national prominence when her song ?Black Roses Red? was featured on the soundtrack of The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants.    Since then, Grace has appeared at Bonnaroo and Coachella and has even graced the cover of Teen People.  In 2009, Alana Grace released her sophomore album With One Word.  The album features Grace?s pleasing voice applied to somewhat pro-forma songwriting.  The cream of the crop is ?Paranoid?, with Alana Grace channeling a bit of Amy Lee in an edgy pop tune that?s ready for prime time.  ?Mess Of You? sounds like radio fodder, but Grace presents it with real energy.  ?Black Roses Red? is included here as the final track, and it?s easy to see why this was a breakout track for Alana Grace.  The song has a chorus that sticks with you, and Grace fills the vocal line with an edgy and vibrant energy that taps you on the shoulder and insists you pay attention.  Much of the rest of the album is pedestrian; neither particularly exciting nor imposing.  Grace?s voice is a pleasure to listen to, but the songwriting throughout With One Word is uneven.  When she?s on, Grace is capable of writing highly infectious and enjoyable pop songs, but no one bats a thousand.
Rating: 2.5 Stars (Out of 5)

No Age keep the Indie Spirit Alive

I recently started listening to NO AGE when I saw that they opened for PAVEMENT and SONIC YOUTH. Now when two heavyweights in the indie/alternative world put a band on their bill, it makes me take notice. Their latest record, "Everything In Between" is so chocked full of goodness that it almost made me skip a beat when I listened to it for the first time.

For a mere two piece outfit to create such varied and creative music is a testament to their talent. It is no wonder that Dean and Randy met at famed LA Record Store Aron's since their records are rife with their influences. From the Jesus and Mary Chain drone of "Life Prowler" the the Peter Hook style bass of "Glitter" to the punk fuzz of "Fever Dreaming" it's like listening to a record collection on crack.

No Age have the unique ability to morph their sound without compromising the basic ideal of the music. It's as if their songs are celebration of the underground and the notion that if you have passion it doesn't matter what you sound like. Their is so much power in the drums, notably on the slightly poppy "Valley Hump Crash" and the balls out rock of "Shred and Transcend" that the whole thing threatens to come apart.

The more I listen to the record the more I find the nuances and the textures. With each listen I realize this is a band the be reckoned with; if that's even what they want.

Song of the Week: "Until You"

Gearing up for Miranda Lambert's concert next week at Terminal 5, I've been listening to country music all day. (Not that I don't normally listen to country music to begin with...) I came across Billy Currington's song, "Until You" off his latest release and decided to make it my song of the week until I found out it was a cover of Dave Barnes' original. Having featured Barnes on the blog several times, I couldn't believe that I had never heard it before. Watch the video below, I'd love to know your thoughts!

Stryper - Murder By Pride

Murder by Pride is a forthcoming album by Stryper. The first single for the album, "Peace of Mind", debuted at #27 on Christianrock.net on October 24, 2008 and peaked at #1 on February 22, 2009. The track is a cover version, originally performed by Boston. Michael Sweet is currently a touring member of the legendary Seventies band.

Starting May 5, the band announced to release a song per week on iTunes up until July 21. As each new song is released, the previous one will no longer be available until the full album is released. Robert Sweet did not play on the album as the drum parts were provided by Kenny Aranoff. Stylistically, Michael Sweet has commented, that "after years of speaking to fans and hearing comments like 'more guitars,' 'more solos' and 'more screams,' I decided to keep those suggestions in mind as I wrote each song. It was important to me to try to get back to that early sound of STRYPER yet at the same time, to remain relevant today. It's certainly not an easy thing to do, but as I listen to Murder By Pride, I think that was accomplished.

The music of Nazatron can be best described as a cross between alternative pop and electro rock.

His website tells us that Nazatron is the musical vehicle of Genaaron Diamente. Genaaron grew up in a small town in Victoria, Australia and started playing guitar as soon as he was big enough to hold one. A steady diet of beatles records, 90s metal, school jazz bands and guitar lessons quickly evolved into an irreversible love of music. After high school, Genaaron moved to Melbourne and after a brief stint studying computer programming he decided to study music full time. He spent the next few years honing his craft and practicing jazz scales. But Nazatron was not satisfied. The crazy metal and electro beats that he still listened to when no one was around started to consume him.

After graduating with a nice piece of paper that said music degree, Nazatron gave in to the inner music rebel and decided to give life to the music that had been growing inside of him for years. At last, his world started to synergize. He could now marry his love for music and jazz scales with the computer skills that he secretly still harbored. He locked himself in his room (that is, in between teaching guitar and playing/singing Clapton songs at dirty pubs) and after a few years, his debut album was complete.

Having listened to the album 'Fork In The Road' we are pretty impressed to say the least, there is a mixture of styles and moods the featured track is just one dimension of these.

We featured The Brute Chorus back in April of this year. A quick history lesson on the band. The Brute Chorus began taking it to the people with a monthly residency at Camden?s infamous Hawley Arms pub. The band?s first releases, charming offerings of psyched-out garage-folk we?e put out on the Hawley Arms backed Bumpman records to widespread aclaim from Steve Lamacq, Zane Lowe, NME, and The Fly amongst others.

The scuzzy blues-folk quartet took their splendidly raucous live shows on the road with a host of festivals apperances including Glastonbury, Camden Crawl, Great Escape, Secret Garden Party, Belladrum, Standon & Kendal Calling. As well as touring with the likes of Martha Wainwright, Rumble Strips, Ida Maria and even a trip to the seaside with Peggy Sue and The Pirates as well as numerous headline UK and European shows.

Among others their music may well appeal to fans of acts as diverse as Nick Cave, The Gun Club, Edward Sharpe and the Arctic Monkeys to name just a few. 'How The Caged Bird Sings' was released on October 12th via The MuseBox/EMI Distribution, and if rockabilly-tinged garage rockers are your thing you will I am sure enjoy!

I am told that Arron Dean was raised on a small farm in an area called Knoppieslaagte, about an hour outside of Johannesburg, amid the political upheaval that led to the end of apartheid. As a young man at the turn of the new century, he followed his muse to the United States in pursuit of his dream of being a great jazz guitarist. "I was pretty young and utterly in love with jazz," Dean says. After a few years in Boston, his determination led him to New York City, where he made his mark on the scene?and came to the realization that "making it" in jazz means playing to disinterested bar patrons and "making about $200 a week."

The South Africa-via-Brooklyn singer-songwriter has had several homes and musical identities in his lifetime, howeve his new album MPLS has a defined and very appealing sound that I am sure will appeal to a wide audience.

The promotional piece describes his new sound, as a strain of modern Americana infused with a hint of British melancholy a la Nick Drake, which sprang from the old bluegrass and country records Dean played to find peace during long drives through the Midwestern expanse.

Davy Mooney is a world-renowned jazz guitarist who also sings and writes melodic, lyrically complex, and often nostalgic tunes with his alter-ego band ?Davy Mooney and the Ghosts?. Featuring his guitar playing and vocals as well as saxophone and piano stylings from virtuoso musicians, the ?Ghosts? weave a genre-defying musical tapestry that aims, first and foremost, for the heart.

We are also told that - Davy Mooney and the Ghosts is his new singer-songwriter project and that Mooney has been leading a double life for his entire musical career: he is well known on the international jazz scene as a melodic and harmonically sophisticated guitarist, but for the past 15 years he has been performing solo in coffee houses and small bars singing his bittersweet, nostalgic songs to old folkies and young indie-rockers.

Although some of the songs go back 10 years or more, Davy Mooney hadn't gotten around to recording them until this past year. The CD is "Ghosts of Music, Past", and the band Mooney has put together to perform the music is called, fittingly, the Ghosts.

The featured track gives a wonderful taste of the album which just oozes class!

When the band 'Stars of Heaven' imploded in 1990 its occupants were in need of an outlet to lavish their gifts upon us and that place became known as The Sewing Room. Well thats the way to introduce a band to the Beehive albeit sadly on this occasion the band are no more however a reissue is upon us and as we are guilty of missing them first time around are delighted to share this info with you.

This Dublin quartet only shone for a couple of LP's, one of which now finds itself being reissued on Indiecater. 'And Nico' was a stunning debut record but despite the attentions of John Peel and a large critical fanbase it has slipped into the ether.

We are just grateful that the music is being released again and a visit to Indiecater where you can also find a history of the band by drummer Dez Foley, is recommended.

OK first the promo words and background - Janell McCracken p/k/a Lola Bleu is a truly unique talent. The beautiful 22-years-old songstress has been singing all of her life and it shows on her debut album Love Will Find A Way.

Released in early August on HSP Music, the album is the story of Bleu getting out of a relationship, dealing with the breakup and finally finding the person she wants to be with. Produced primarily by David Sanders II, Love covers various genres from soul to hip-hop to mid-tempo grooves with the one constant being Bleu?s smooth soulful voice.

Recorded over a two year period, Bleu put her heart and soul into the album. ?Recording the album matured me a whole lot with my voice and how I sing and as a person,? she says. ?I learned and am still learning more about myself musically every time I sing each song.? Though she is only 22-years-old Bleu has known that she wanted to be a professional singer since she was seven years old. She began singing at a very early age in her father?s church which led to her catching the showbiz bug very early.

I was not disappointed when I listened to Lola ! Her voice is just as the promo said, smooth and soulful and although hip hop is rarely my thing songs such as the featured track are most definately. One for all soul lovers to keep an eye out for!

Lost Boy? is the project of Brooklyn-based 26-year old, Davey Jones. For over five years, Jones has been regularly playing his infectious brand of lo-fi, punk-infused bedroom pop around the NYC-area while handing out free CD-R?s of his music at shows. With all the hard work, people have begun to take notice of his keep-it-fun and simple approach to catchy, garage punk.

In 2010, Lost Boy has garnered coverage on Pitchfork, Altered Zones, Brooklyn Vegan, and Prefixmag.com. Looking to take his music beyond New York, Lost Boy? has released a free, digital-single of his fan-favorite ?Fast, Burn? with ?Oh My Creepy? as the B-side to hold people over while he records his new LP, slated for an early 2011 release.

It's infectious music and beehive cant wait for more!

And again we quote - 'As a turntablist and energetic one-man musical act, Boy Eats Drum Machine spins breaks and surgically inserts sounds while juggling vocals, percussion, and saxophone.

Touring the country like a mad man, and known to his friends as Jonny Ragel, he started to make recordings under the name Boy Eats Drum Machine in 2001 when he used a 4 track to record and load his MPC with scads of samples, creating blippy pop experimentations.

He wanted to evoke the idea of pac man and the music of the NES game metroid. He sold his mpc and switched exclusively to computer-based recordings a couple years later'. Boy Eats Drum Machine has a brand new record out (October 2010) ? 20 Beats.

You can stream it over at bandcamp, me I need to go and take a sit down...

We finish this round up with Lykke Li, who is a wonderful Swedish indie singer.

Her music often blends elements of pop, electronic, and alternative rock; various instruments can also be found in her songs, including violins, tambourines, trumpets, saxophones, and cellos. She released her debut album, Youth Novels, in 2008.

Lykke Li's new EP ('Get Some' / 'Paris Blue') is now available from her website and we are more than pleased to be able to include one of the songs on Beehive Candy, which is a great way to finish this edition.

Kasey Lansdale ? Never Say Never

Kasey Lansdale ? Never Say Never
2010, Kasey Lansdale
Kasey Lansdale is a little Texas gal with big dreams.  At the age of 23 she already writes songs for one of the largest Music Row song factories, tours the world and is on the verge of dropping her third EP, Never Say Never.  Lansdale has the looks and voice to make it in Nashville and beyond, but also has brains galore.  A published writer, Lansdale wrote a story at the tender age of eight that is currently being shopped as a Hollywood screenplay.  Music is the force that turns Lansdale?s world however, and with Never Say Never she?s elevated her game to a level that tends to garner national or even international attention.
Never Say Never opens with ?Half As Much?, a mature and literate kiss-off song that?s full of the sorrow of a classic country heartbreaker, but takes the type of positive turn that Garth Brooks was known for.  ?Why Can?t I? rues her inability to just wall off her emotions for a former love when he has simply walked away like nothing has ever happened.  ?Just Another Guy? is an uncomfortable blend of 1970?s pop and country.  This song simply doesn?t work well, although Lansdale?s voice saves it from being a total washout.  Lansdale is inspired by Bonnie Raitt on the title track.  ?Never Say Never? explores the idea of romantic returns, justifying them at times and even allowing that sometimes we just can?t help ourselves.  ?Hard To Be A Lady? is the best overall track on the album, and the one most likely to land Lansdale on the country charts.  The concept is a classic one, that a particular man is so irresistible that it makes it hard for her to behave.  Lansdale owns this one as if she?s in the middle of the emotional/hormonal tornado the song implies.
Kasey Lansdale isn?t just a vocalist, she?s a performer.  Never Say Never confirms Lansdale?s place among some of the bright young stars in country music.  The EP should, in a perfect world, land Lansdale on the charts and in the hearts of country music fans everywhere.
Rating: 4 Stars (Out of 5)
Learn more about Kasey Lansdale at www.kaseylansdale.com or www.myspace.com/kaseylansdale.  Never Say Never should see the light of day in early 2011.  Keep checking Kasey Lansdale's website for availability.

Neil Young Brings The Acoustic Noise

Neil Young has been around so long that a new release just kind of happens. There is no fanfare or hoopla. No TODAY SHOW live in Times Square performance or a retrospective special on VH1 prior to it's release. It just comes out; no single or video. Such was the case with his latest "Le Noise". A few items you should know about this

1) The album was produced by Daniel Lanois.
2) There is no backing band or additional musicians.
3) It is perhaps the noisiest acoustic record ever made.

Let me explain. The album opener is a double shot of crunchy, thick guitar tracks entitled "Walk With Me" and "Sign of Love". Despite the guitar, Lanois recorded the song as if it had been played acoustically so the vocals are clear and straightforward. It gives the songs a worn, bluesy feel. Young is mining the same territory lyrically that he always does in his acoustic troubadour mode, namely lost love and regrets of opportunities past. But unlike "Harvest" or "Harvest Moon", Young's sound choices here change the dynamic. He does put down the electric guitar for the achingly plaintive "Love and War"; a meditation on the relationship between those that go to war and the loves they leave behind and wistful "Peaceful Valley Boulevard" which could have been an outtake from either of the "Harvest" collections.

This sound may be the closest to an amalgamation of his otherwise dual musical personality. When he plays with Crazy Horse, it's balls out rock and roll. When he is by himself, he is more somber and melancholy. Here the lyrics are the latter but the sound is the former (sort of). It's a confoundedly odd listen but after a couple of spins you begin to appreciate both Young and Lanois for their creation. It's a fresh take on both Young's patented sound and a reinvention of the old singer-songwriter format that he helped pioneer. It reminds me why I love his music so much in the first place.

REQUIEM RISING

REQUIEM means any grand musical composition, performed in honor of a deceased person. It's also
a mass said or sung for the repose of a departed soul. But PINOY NEW WAVERS will remember this as one of the legendary get together of BANDS and MOBILES back in the XB and BM days. YUP!! Its' a NEW WAVE PARTY!! Now, some of my KABAYANS who organized it here in MANILA back in the 80s are bringing it back again. Well, this time it will be held at SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA and entitled "REQUIEM RISING" which will be held on NOVEMBER 20, 2010. Performances by JULIE PLUG, GOLDA + GUNS , and PAGES with Music Mixes from two of MANILA's LEGENDARY MOBILES namely MODE ZERO and EYEBALL DUB. Btw, I have already featured MODE ZERO here on "The Doctor Is In" back in JUNE 2009 and you could check it out on my archives under the Label of "MANILA'S NEW WAVE MOBILES". So if you guys are in the vicinity do check this NEW WAVE DANCE PARTY at PAUL SMITH BUILDING. There were already two REQUIEM Parties here in MANILA back in the 80s and so this would be officially It's Third Part of the saga and according to the organizers they will try to bring back the party here in MANILA too. That would be interesting isn't it?
