Too Phat Medley by Joe Flizzow at Acoustic Nights

Here's the opening song at my session for Joe Flizzow during the Acoustic Nights show at KL Pac a few weeks ago.

It's a compilation of songs from the Too Phat era, which in my opinion, still the best hip-hop group even till today!

Anticipate the release of the full show on Astro and DVD!

New 60s Favorites, Part Two

Red with purple flashes. That is how guitarist Eddie Phillips has described the Creation's music. The Creation are my latest 60s favorite number two. This band came from the UK and was founded in 1966. The Creation were a short-lived band but achieved quite a lot during their short period of existing as a band. These achievements were not chart-topping hits but insteadmany excellent mod, garage and psychedelic rock songs that are still living pieces ofsome of the most energetic British music of the era.

Originally I decided to check out this band due to its alleged influence on power popmusic. I had these two compilations, Complete Collection, Vol. 1: Making Time and Vol. 2: Biff Bang Pow, in my possession for some time before the time was right to discover the wonders they contained. These CDs include all music by the band made in the 60s with some different mixes and versions.

I was fascinated by Nightmares from the very beginning. That song is a good example of the certain kind of dark mood that is sometimes present in the Creation's music. I don't know exactly what made it a bit difficult to hear the beauty of this music... Listening to it more was surely the thing that made it open up to me. There is after all a lot to process: a lot of harmonic sound, lots of great songs, lots of different influences.

I have been listening to the first CD more and come to appreciate the stuff very, very much. Everything is solid, well-written and has a pleasant, somewhat heavy garage sound. The combination of melodic British beat music tradition is mixed with rhythm and blues and often psychedelic elements resulting in really impressive, soulful, catchy and memorable music. The mysterious psychedelic feel is also quite enjoyable and there are excellent vocal harmonies.. Check out Making Time, Tom Tom, How Does It Feel to Feel, If I Stay Too Long, All That I Am, the successful single Painter Man, or any other song for the matter! This really is pure kick-ass rocking 60s magic.

The closest counterparts to the Creation are obviously the Who, and perhaps the Kinks. Listening to the Creation can actually momentarily make you feel like you're listening to the Who. The sound can be very similar to the early Who. I think I'll need to dig deeper into this mod music, as well as freakbeat.. and garage.

Tom Scott - Huntington Beach USA 1979

This is Tom Scott live at The Golden Bear, Huntington Beach, CA, USA back in 1979. These are the notes in full that came with the recording (grateful thanks to the person who penned them) - This recording comes from the archives of the Golden Bear night club in Huntingon Beach, California. At the time, the Golden Bear was the oldest running night club in America open since the mid 1920's. Eventually earthquake building codes made it too expensive to upgrade, and it was eventually torn down.  Everybody from Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and The Doors have played at the Golden Bear.

I was a frequent patron of the Golden Bear, and I recorded many shows at the venue.  Eventually I became friends with the sound board guy, and we began trading some tapes.  This recording is one of those tapes. Like many of the Golden Bear tapes, this one isn't a complete show.  After 47 minutes, it cuts off. Since the Golden Bear usually ran 60-70 minute sets, it's very likely that the last 15-20 minutes are missing. The concert was recorded from the sound board on the house cassette deck in mono.

Tom Scott's professional career began as a teenager, as leader of a jazz ensemble Neoteric Trio, and then as a "first-call" (i.e. high-demand) session musician. He has dozens of solo recordings for which he collected thirteen Grammy nominations (three of which he won). He also has numerous film and television scoring credits, including composing and conducting the score for the movie 'Conquest of the Planet of the Apes'. He has also appeared on records by such diverse artists as George Harrison, The Grateful Dead, Paul McCartney, Steppenwolf, Whitney Houston, Barbra Streisand, Joni Mitchell, Blondie, Eddie Money, Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, The Blues Brothers, Quincy Jones, Carole King, Olivia Newton-John and Frank Sinatra.

Perfect Pop Song (Part 20)

SCHOOL OF FISH made two really good records. Then they broke up and lead singer JOSH CLAYTON-FELT made a solo record before he passed away. I will always have a fond place in my heart for these guys. Here is their first single and their biggest hit, "Three Strange Days".

Enjoy!!

Hello Australia - Part 1

Melbourne City

Was on a vacation Down Under during the CNY holidays. This post will be the first of a few on my break in Australia.

Getting around the city is easy. Just spot these signages around the city and hop onto the tourist shuttle where its free and takes one around tourist spots

Melbourne's Central Business District

The century old St. Paul's Cathedral, right in the heart of the city.
You definitely wouldn't miss it's grand stature as it's located just opposite Flinders St station.

Just a slight walk down the same road, you'll come to Hosier Lane
A lane dedicated to the people with creative juices for Graffiti

Walking around the city during the Chinese New Year festivities, we bumped into 'Choy San Yeh' and his followers

....who looks like he's in great need for a diet!

It is also in Melbourne that you actually find people QUEUING to get into Tiffany & Co.

One of the main attractions in Melbourne City is the Eureka Skydeck.

Having the observatory deck located at over 88-storeys high, one would get a fantastic view of the city from here

Got ourselves the Sun & Stars passes, we went up there twice!

The city definitely looks much more brilliant at night being illuminated.

Sliding back to reality....

In the next post... we shall visit some interesting places around the state of Victoria

Stay tuned!

NXNE Picks (Thursday June 14, 2012)

Purity Ring
  Purity Ring

It'd been my intention to have had my picks up earlier this week but that just did not happen what with NXNE sneaking up on me, me catching up on some belated blog posts (Hot Docs), posting my review of the recent Rufus Wainwright show, and well just being a bit lazy. Unfortunately, I didn't get up my recommendations for yesterday's NXNE shows although I did pick up my media pass at the Hyatt Regency where I caught a Q & A with the thoroughly ridiculous but admittedly entertaining crew of Epic Meal Time, and then headed over to new vinyl / vintage clothing outlet Of A Kind which was hosting a NXNE-related event with a trio of bands plus the Static Zine crew on hand who were celebrating the launch of Issue 4 (the NXNE edition) of their zine. They've stated they will not be posting concert reviews of anything of the bands they see during the festival but rather will be writing about their experience and if their recap of Wednesday's events is an indications, it's been fun times so far.

I'd intended to get up a post today with my recommendations for today through Sunday but that's just not going to happen, but I will get up today's(Thursday) recommendations and I should have up Friday through Sunday's recommendations either tomorrow or over the next few days:

Afternoon ----- Later this afternoon I'll be heading over to Artscape Gibraltar Point on Toronto Island for a free show featuring Chicago's Smith Westerns and Toronto's Dusted, the melodic folk project of Brian Borcherdt (of Holy Fuck) playing as a duo with Leon Taheny, the latter from whom you can expect a record on Polyvinyl later this summer . Sponsored by Jansport Bonfire Sessions, local artist Emily Bitze created a poster for this event, and concertgoers will receive limited edition silk-screened prints at the show along with JanSport giveaways throughout the event. The event does require an RSVP which is already closed unfortunately, but I'll let you know how things went if I make it in.

9 pm ----- Ex-Constantines Steve Lambke's solo project Baby Eagle has been off my radar for a while but he's apparently back and will be playing an early set at The Great Hall. I'll probably be down at the El Mocambo to check out Toronto shoegaze / post-grunge duo Beliefs.

10 pm ----- Another local act who've been off my radar for a few years is chirpy Toronto indiepop outfit Hooded Fang and they'll be playing down at the Horseshoe Tavern. My plan B will be Toronto duo Army Girls who I'm inclined to give a second chance given the adulations that have been laid on them by many although when I'd seen them play live back in May 2011 I hadn't been particularly blown away, although I'm a big fan of vocalist/guitarist of Carmen Elle who've seen play live with many artists around town.

11 pm ----- The neo-psycho-pop of Brooklynites Young Magic seems interesting and they'll be playing at Wrongbar while I've been itching to see Toronto free-jazz trio Badbadnotgood who'll be playing The Hoxton and have been racking rave reviews all over. But to avoid the hubbub over at Wrongbar and with the likelihood that I'll get to see Badbadnotgood play another time, I'll probably head over to The Garrison for San Franciscan female post-punk trio Grass Widow (who I've read have been described as a cross between The Slits and The Shrangi-las) whose most previous album Past Time was released in 2010 through Kill Rock Stars and whose most recent album Internal Logic was released this past May through HLR.

Midnight ----- It's a toss up between the all-female goth-garage-stomp of Nashville's The Black Belles, signed to Jack White's Third Man label and who'll be playing at The Garrison or the DIY bubblegum punk of Los Angeles duo Bleached who'll be playing a set at the Silver Dollar. Mind you both bands will be playing multiple sets during the festival so I could perhaps skip this time slot and grab a bite to eat. Win-win.

1 am ----- Ok maybe I'll see Badbadnotgood at The Hoxton at this time slot but otherwise I have a but of a hankering to catch the recent 4AD-signed Montreal indie electronic duo Purity Ring who'll no doubt be attracting a crowd down at Wrongbar. Otherwise, another buzzed act this year, Brooklyn noise-punk quartet The Men who'll be playing The Garrison may just be where I end up. There's no guarantee I'll get into any of these sets given the buzz of all these artists. This is when it's important to have a plan D, E, and F.

Favorite Albums of 2012...so far....

Can 2012 be halfway over all ready? It's been a whirlwind of a year already and there are still 6 more months to complete it. I look forward to the upcoming months with eager anticipation as Amy and I are expecting our first child in late November. What I can tell our new baby years from now about the first six months of 2012 in music? Well, for starters, I'll say your father took a nosedive into some more aggressive albums that I absolutely loved. New releases from The Men, Japandroids, Cloud Nothings, Jack White, Sleigh Bells and a couple album full on retro garage numbers from Ty Segall have found a different place in my heart so far in 2012. But I've also been impressed with a lot of female led artists' releases. First Aid Kid, Sharon Van Etten, Alabama Shakes, Beach House and Fiona Apple have all been way better than average. Artists that have had a foothold in music for quite awhile have released some good music in 2012 as well. I wouldn't tell anyone that the new releases from Springsteen, Hot Chip or Spiritualized are washes. In fact, they are all growers with a lot of potential to be top 20 favorites at the end of the year. And my mellower side hasn't been let down as Damien Jurado and The Tallest Man On Earth both have released exceptional LPs in the first half of the year.

I guess what I'm getting at is 2012 has been a stronger year for music in retrospect than maybe 2011 was at this time last year. And that just gets me excited for a slew of artists in August and September that I'm looking forward to checking out. My message to my newborn would be, you were born in a year of some pretty fine modern music. Now I'm going to play "King Of The World" from First Aid Kit for you.

Like last year at this time, I'm categorizing what I've loved, liked, sleepers, etc. below. A poll is up on the side of the page asking you the reader "What have you enjoyed the most in 2012 so far?" I'm always looking forward to seeing what others have enjoyed so vote for as many LPs as you like.

Hello everyone!! I just wanna THANK everyone who still check my "blogspot.com" which is often imitated and never duplicated. Copying is still the best form of Flattery right? Well, my blogspot is still The One and Only ORIGINAL PINOY 80s/ NEW WAVE At Iba Pa Blogspot that's CUT ABOVE THE REST!! Ha Ha Ha!! So do always join me in the quest to travel back in time. This blogspot isn't exclusively New Wave nor It's Underground and of course don't forget I'm not a Concert King. Get my drift? He He He!! Haven't been blogging that much lately due to my busy schedule, but yet I'll still try to make more interesting, original, and unique blogpost "The Dr. Stirring Rhod Way". THANKS FOR DROPPING BY!!

Oregon (50 Songs For 50 States)

When I visit Oregon someday, I want to find a seedy old bar, preferably in Portland. I will look for a jukebox. In that jukebox I will look for Loretta Lynn's "Van Lear Rose" LP. After I locate it, I will select her duet with Jack White "Portland, Oregon." I will then meet my wife back at the table where she'll have a pitcher of slow gin fizz waiting for us. Then we will sing in gleeful unison:

Well Portland Oregon and sloe gin fizz
If that ain't love then tell me what is
Well I lost my heart it didn't take no time
But that ain't all. I lost my mind in Oregon

At some point by the end of the night, we'll leave the bar..but before we do, we'll see if we can get the bartender to follow the same prescription that Jack and Loretta serve up at the end of "Portland, Oregon."

Well sloe gin fizz works might fast
When you drink it by the pitcher and not by the glass
Hey bartender before you close
Pour us one more drink and a pitcher to go

And then maybe we'll visit some rose gardens the next day.....after we loved enough for the both of us. Here's to you Oregon, sincerely, Loretta Lynn and Jack White.
