RhoDeo 1209 Goldy Rhox 61

Hello, today the 61st post of GoldyRhox, classic pop rock. As it happens a mystery band member died today triggering this post. Assembled in Los Angeles in 1966 by Robert "Bob" Rafelson and Bert Schneider for the American television series which aired from 1966 to 1968, the musical acting quartet was composed of Americans Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork, and Englishman Davy Jones (who died today of an heart attack). The band's music was initially supervised by producer Don Kirshner.

At the time of the group's formation, its producers saw them as a Beatles-like band which got them the nick of the Pre-Fab Four. At the start, the band members provided vocals, but were given only limited performing and production opportunities. They eventually fought for and earned the right to collectively supervise all musical output under the band's name. The group undertook several concert tours, allowing an opportunity to perform as a live band as well as on the TV series. Although the show was canceled in 1968, the band continued to record music through 1970. The group reached the height of fame from 1966 to 1968, and influenced many future artists.

Their albums and singles have sold over 65 million copies worldwide. Todays mystery band released 8 albums between 1966 and 1970, in it's aftermath Discogs lists 50 compilation albums. The Pre-Fab Four have done many reunion tours in the following decades, last one was in may 2011.

***** ***** ***** ***** *****

Most of the albums i 'll post made many millions for the music industry and a lot of what i intend to post still gets repackaged and remastered decades later, squeezing the last drop of profit out of bands that for the most part have ceased to exist long ago, although sometimes they get lured out of the mothballs to do a big bucks gig or tour. Now i'm not as naive to post this kinda music for all to see and have deleted, these will be a black box posts, i'm sorry for those on limited bandwidth but for most of you a gamble will get you a quality rip don't like it, deleting is just 2 clicks...That said i will try to accommodate somewhat and produce some cryptic info on the artist and or album.

Todays mystery album is a double compilation from 2007, it has every hit and more that's 36 tracks in total 100 min of monkeying around.

Kings of Leon Language of Flowers Starflyer 59 The Lovely Feathers

August 2011 Best Heavy Metal CDs

1. Revocation - 'Chaos Of Forms' (Relapse)
Revocation could have crumbled from the pressure of trying to outperform the stellar Existence Is Futile, but they pull through with an album on par with their sophomore release. The album has insane technical guitars and a large amount of infectiousness, all glued together by well-rounded instrumental work. The band has brought a second guitarist into the group for the first time. A brilliant move on their part, it allows for more solo trade-offs and tighter rhythms. Each song is like a splash of aftershave on Kevin McCallister?s face. The solos on ?No Funeral? may leave a listener with that permanent expression. Another member also helps with the backing vocals, which are given leeway to battle with David Davidson?s tormented screams.

2. Today Is The Day - 'Pain Is A Warning' (Black Market Activities)
While Today is the Day always retain their signature sound, a core identity that is immediately recognizable, the band incorporate the greatest strengths of the current line-up. And, on Pain Is A Warning, the album benefits from a thick, luxurious sound and a strong rock engine. The record kicks off with a siege of boiling pitch aggression in the first two tracks, ??Expectations Exceed Reality? and Death Curse.? After doing its best to physically assault the listener, Pain Is A Warning trades in the blasting rage for a different type of fury. ?Remember to Forget? is a much more subdued effort that has a circular construction and repetitive, gently delivered lyrics combining for a supremely disturbing track. This is a slow burn, quieter anger that twists, writhes and plots.

3. YOB - 'Atma' (Profound Lore)
Doom metal is effective at pummeling listeners, repeating riffs and lulling devotees into a state that borders on narcolepsy. The best doom couples hypnotic phrasing with music that doesn?t offer complacency, but demands that listeners think and feel. YOB again achieves it with Atma, an album named after a term that means ?higher self? in numerous Eastern religions.Atma is a tricky album, one that steers you into a false sense of complacency. Like a Zen Buddhist teacher it misdirects, plays the trickster, demands focus. This is YOB?s sixth album and it?s evident that they still have much to offer. Each song features a riff that functions like a Russian nesting doll. On a first listen it sounds like there?s nothing else when there?s a multitude of riches.

4. Leprous - 'Bilateral' (Inside Out)
There are influences on Bilateral ranging from The Mars Volta to Porcupine Tree on songs like ?Acquired Taste.? The band does make sure to leave enough room for an out-of-control track featuring a guest spot by a black metal legend. Former Emperor vocalist Ihsahn gives a rousing performance on ?Thorn,? which is supported by screeching trumpets. The song would have fitted in with Ihsahn?s latest solo album After.

5. Flourishing - 'The Sum Of All Fossils' (The Path Less Traveled)
It?s difficult to place Flourishing?s first full-length in terms of genre; it fits no category neatly. There are definitely significant death metal and grind influences, but to leave it at that would be reductive and inaccurate. The sound is metallic and mechanical, but without the cold echoes of industrial; instead, the sound clatters and pings like metal heated red-hot.There?s also a strong avant-garde hardcore sensibility and breathless blasts of noise. The result is something that Skynet might have composed to inspire its mechanical troops during the eradication of the human race. However, that?s not accurate either, as this isn?t robotically produced and lifeless like so much industrial, but rather a product of instruments being pushing to their limits. There are human minds behind this madness.

THE WILD SWANS on Eat Bulaga!!

Well, can't get enough of that Nostalgic Concert by THE WILD SWANS here in Philippines? Definitely, It was one of the most memorable New Wave Concert I ever watched here in MANILA!! I have already watched a couple of these New Wave 80s concerts here in MANILA before and THE WILD SWANS Concert will be marked as One of the BEST or if not, It's THE VERY BEST indeed!! Even though there was a typhoon, their concert really made a blast like a typhoon too so THANK YOU to those people who brought them here in the Philippines where the term NEW WAVE Genre is very unique and different in terms of definition comparing from other countries around the globe. I'm featuring right now here in my little blog "The Doctor Is In", the Legendary band's performance on the Philippine Legendary Noon Time Show "EAT BULAGA" last SEPTEMBER 28, 2011. What's very interesting here was EAT BULAGA Host Julia Clarete's comments on the band and on Echo And The Bunnymen. Wheeew!! Nice One Miss Julia!! Rock On Girl!! PAUL SIMPSON also introduced his Band Line up which for me is as Legendary as this Liverpool band. Btw, EAT BULAGA just recently launched their COFFEE TABLE BOOK which featured the Three Decades of the Show. The Mastermind of this extraordinary book is Joey De Leon. THANK YOU THE WILD SWANS for a GREAT PERFORMANCE!!

Here's the VIDEO CLIP of THE WILD SWANS

IDENTITY CRISIS Archived Articles

In anticipation of the IDENTITY CRISIS Reunion on REQUIEM's "REBEL YELL", I decided to feature again the Legendary Pinoy Gothic Band "IDENTITY CRISIS" here in my little blog "The Doctor Is In" by featuring Archived Articles of the band from 1988 to 1990 which COOL CARLA shared back in March 2006. YUP!! THANKS to COOL CARLA we can reminisce again the IDENTITY CRISIS so definitely It's another trip down memory lane "The Dr. Stirring Rhod Way". The band's reunion according to the group will also be a sort of tribute to the late "BOGS AMBROSIO" who was their Bass Player who passed away two years ago (February 9, 2009). IDENTITY CRISIS became one of the pioneering alternative bands in the Philippines which was formed back in 1986 composed of Carla Arbaya aka. "Cool Carla" on Lead Vocals, Buddy 'Boy' Arceo on Vocals, Leni Llapitan on Keyboards & Programming, Resty Cornejo on Guitars, Bogs Ambrosio on Bass, and Marvin Mendiola on Drums. Of course, every PINOY NEW WAVER/PUNK knows that they released two albums back then namely "TALE OF TWO" in 1987 and "WATER CAME RUNNING" in 1990 which I have both on Cassette Tape Formats which you can see on my archived Identity Crisis blogpost I created back in September 7, 2007. Wheew!! That's also Four Years ago!! Up until now PINOY NEW WAVERS are still hoping that these two albums will be remastered in CD Formats. That would be totally cool right KABAYANS? Are we all wishing for a falling star? One great band who was also coined back in the 80s as "The Band who's ahead of their time".

So here it goes, may I present you archived articles of IDENTITY CRISIS all courtesy of COOL CARLA. THANKS Cool Carla!!

THE SCORE MAGAZINE
May-June 1988 Issue

We start off with an interesting and very colorful article of IDENTITY CRISIS on the Legendary Philippine Alternative Music Magazine "THE SCORE MAGAZINE". It's the feature on "SCORE FOCUS" entitled "NOT A CRISIS AFTER ALL". The interview was done by CRISTINA SALES and by reading it, I found the article focusing on the real Identity of IDENTITY CRISIS in terms of their music, lyrics, and their performances on gigs. When asked about the subject on drugs, the members mentioned that the band is "STRAIGHT" although they do a lot of drinking after every concert but nothing dealing on drugs.

So when asked about the influences of Cool Carla on music, definitely everyone knows that SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES top the list. Another influences she mentioned was COCTEAU TWINS, THIS MORTAL COIL, and DEAD CAN DANCE. Their compositions according to Cool Carla were heavily inspired by these bands which according to her "It's something you don't hear everyday, not too heavy nor too light". Well, I just transcribed some of the contents of the articles. Ha Ha Ha!! One great PINOY BAND that really made a mark in the PINOY UNDERGROUND Scene.

JINGLE MAGAZINE
March 1989 Issue

On this JINGLE MAGAZINE Issue back in 1989, two articles about IDENTITY CRISIS were written by BERT JR. and PSYKOKEELER. "TALE OF IDENTITY CRISIS" by Bert Jr. and "RECOGNIZING ONE'S IDENTITY" by Psykokeeler are both interesting articles which discussed about the band's humble beginnings and their "PORTABLE PLAYGROUND" Gig Series. It was written here that IDENTITY CRISIS was formed mid 1985 by both Leni Llapitan and Resty Cornejo who knew each other during their college days. Bogs Ambrosio and Marvin Mendiola were hustled in preceding the band's original male vocalist Buddy Arceo. After the band's very first Gig at TIME SQUARE, they hurled in WXB102 Jock Cool Carla to be their Lead Vocalist and the rest was history I may say. Btw, Resty was the one who came up with the band's name "IDENTITY CRISIS" due to the members different musical influences from Jazz, New Age, Classical to New Wave. Wheeew!! Definitely a crisis indeed don't you think?Well, I guess that's another transcribed article by yours truly. Ha Ha Ha!! I just love this nostalgic trip!! Btw, I just remembered Buddy mentioning on their Reunion Guesting on NU 107's "BALLAD OF THE TIMES" last year 2010 that he still have a copy of the band's early gig minus Cool Carla when he was still the lead vocalist of the band on Betamax Tape. Hmmp? That would be a great video clip to watch and hoping he could share it to all of us.

PLATINUM SONG MAG
July 1990 Issue

This last article of IDENTITY CRISIS I'm featuring right now was taken from the "PLATINUM MAG" which was written by DIDITH GONZALES and it focused on the band's feelings just before any performances and gigs. The author expressed her great admiration of the band and mentioned seeing them performed at a place called "CLUB A." and loves their song "IMAGINING OKTOBER". According to the members, IDENTITY CRISIS is a combination of both work and play so when It becomes work then the fun's over. I guess that's my last transcribed article for today's blogpost.

I hope you enjoyed another trip down memory lane here on "The Doctor Is In" giving tribute to a Legendary Pinoy Band called "IDENTITY CRISIS". I'll leave you with a Video Clip from the MYX AWARDS Night that featured RICO BLANCO of RIVERMAYA together with two members of IDENTITY CRISIS namely Cool Carla and Leni Llapitan back in March 15, 2007 which was few months before I finally created this little blog of mine back in August 24, 2007. YUP!! This video clip was also Four Years Old like my blog. He He He!! Like what I usually say here on my blog "MUSIC MATTERS, AND MEMORIES OF IT MATTERS MOST". So get ready KABAYANS for the upcoming IDENTITY CRISIS Reunion!! THANKS AGAIN for dropping by!!

Sloan @ Echo Beach, Toronto (August 5, 2011)

Sloan @ Echo Beach: photo by Michael Ligon

Sloan @ Echo Beach: photo by Michael Ligon

Sloan once were fashionable - for about a year, maybe two. They were right on board with the alt-rock movement of the early 1990's when Nirvana and Sonic Youth were bringing the indie and 'punk' music to the forefront of the music industry. But since their second album, 1994's "Twice Removed", the band have gone the decidedly unfashionable route for the last seventeen years playing out their pop and classic rock influences. Over the band's twenty year career, they've released ten full-lengths, two EP's and a live album and have solidly established themselves, I think, as one of Canada's all-time best bands.

The band played a free show at Echo Beach in Toronto at the beginning of August. The classics of course were what the fans were obviously there for and Sloan eased their way into the set with a trio of songs from their most recent album "The Double Cross" before giving the fans what they wanted, starting with their very first single 'Underwhelmed'. Funny thing is that over the course of the last 15-20 years (holy shit I'm feeling old), I'd thought I'd grown out of the noisy, messiness of their first album "Smeared" but since the show have reconnected with its discordant, pop melodies.

The rest of the set was a mixture of their greatest hits/singles, more songs from "The Double Cross" and a few curve-balls such as the vocally reconfigured version of 'C'mon, C'mon (We're Gonna Get It Started)', as well as 'Sinking Ships' both from their album "Navy Blues". The main set ended quite exuberantly with enthusiastic renditions of 'Everything You've Done Wrong' (with a horn section) and 'Who Taught You To Live Like That?'. For the encore, fan favourites 'The Other Man' and 'Money City Maniacs' were included but the pice de rsistance was the band's ode to the venue and well to Toronto's Martha and the Muffins by performing an excellent, albeit, ragged cover of "Echo Beach" featuring second opening band Modern Superstitions' Nyssa on vocals. A fine set all around from a band who have been and who will no doubt remain my favourite Canadian band of all time.

The setlist.
