One of the most influential rap bands of all time has lost a member. Adam Yauch (MCA) of The Beastie Boys. Yauch was diagnosed with cancer in 2009. He was only 47 years old.
I can't count on both my hands how much the Beastie Boys influenced me and a legion of friends and fans into accepting Hip-Hop and rap as a true from of music. I always liked Yauch's style in Beastie Boys songs. With Mike D and Ad Rock giving a slightly higher octave deliverance, you could always tell when Yauch would break in with a deeper voice. That interplay was something I always loved about the Beastie Boys wordplay. The Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall Of Fame earlier this year but Yauch was absent from the ceremonies.
Another thing that makes him stand apart is Yauch was a Buddhist. That influence can be heard on some songs like "Bodhisattva Vow" on "Ill Communication" or the psychedelic leanings on "Something's Got To Give" on "Check Your Head. A lot of fans will go back to "Licensed To Ill" or other big hits, but the three videos below are the songs I'll remember Yauch for the most.
I suggest breaking out your "Paul's Boutique", "Check Your Head" and "Ill Communication" albums out over the weekend. Life is truly precious, Adam Yauch will truly be missed by many including me. R.I.P. MCA,
