The Shins-"Simple Song"
I can't think of a band I'd like to see break through the big wall into this year's big thing than The Shins. Diehard fans will rejoice as the first offering "Simple Song" brings to mind their awesome "Chutes Too Narrow". It sounds familiar but yet all so now. I can foresee this making the rounds over the next several months in the IPOD. Looking forward to their new album "Point Of Morrow" due out on March 20th.
If you really enjoyed Field Music's 2010 album "Measure", then you're probably going to like the first offering from their upcoming album "Plumb", "(I Keep Thinking About) A New Thing". The XTC similarities continue to ring through my head and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that in my book. The whole "Plumb" affair is due out on February 14th. According to the youtube video description, the latest album from Sharon Van Etten features backing from The National's Aaron and Bryce Dessner, Wye Oak's Jenn Wasner, the Walkmen's Matt Barrick, and Doveman's Thomas Bartlett. That's some good company. Plus Van Etten sounds a bit more focused (or at least to my liking) on "Serpents" than from what I remember hearing before from her, kind of a Lucinda Williams rocking it downtown style. Van Etten's album "Tramp" is due out in February.
If you like Okkervil River and you weren't all that bowled over by last year's "I Am Very Far" (like myself), then 2012 holds a bit of a chance in redemption as Jonathon Meiburg from the band are back again with their side project Shearwater. Their 7th studio album album "Animal Joy" is due out on January 24th on Sub-Pop records, but in the meantime enjoy this big sounding piece of animal joy called "Animal Life" which retains a lot of good elements I like from this Austin outfit.
If you've loved the onslaught of 80's sounding bands hitting the scene over the last couple years, why not go with a bit of sophistication to join those keys. This Copenhagen, Denmark based band Choir Of Young Believers' first offering from their upcoming album "Rhine Gold" smells of new romantics from the 80's (a sound I've found more appreciation for the older I've gotten. "Rhine Gold" is due out on March 20th.
