98. Best Coast-When I'm With You

For some odd reason, the song in my head on my 37th birthday as I was showering getting ready to go to a Steelers-Buccaneers game in Venice Beach, Florida. What this means I don't know...but I do agree with the lines "I hate sleeping alone" and "When I'm with you I have fun."

97. Deerhunter-Revival

At a little over two minutes, "Revival" packs enough punch to suffice the cravings of any born again Christian. "I am saved, I am saved. And oh, would you believe it?. All of the day. I felt his presence near me." A true revival is happening in your eardrums with the backing music.

96. Avi Buffalo-Remember Last Time

The beginning part of this seven minute plus ditty is sweetly innocent "I've never written a love song before" and then the kids in Avi Buffalo turn on a jam that would make Neil Young proud. Listen to that guitar solo just soar ala 1972-Crazy Horse style.

95. Vampire Weekend-Run

Could be just another great song from "Contra" but those drum fills remind me head on of Paul Simon's fantastic "I Know What I Know". And the escape this town line of  "...it struck me that the two of us could run" is just icing on the afro-centric cupcake.

94. Hold Steady-Hurricane J
A lot of I read said the Hold Steady aren't aging that gracefully, but a few songs from their latest album are just fine. Like this one about Hurricane Jessie who is going to crash into the harbor this summer which ironically has a guitar line similar in the verse to "Jessie's Girl". Another great summertime love affair gone wrong, even if it is about a pretty good waitress.

John Paul Pitts of Surfer Blood

Has the utmost power to be one of the greatest, fist pumping rock anthems. Simple and forward and vocals drenched in reverb, Surfer Blood has a lot of songs with this sort of power. "Swim to reach the end!"

91. LCD Soundsystem-Drunk Girls

Takes a fun look inside the world of drunk boys and drunk girls (who take an hour to pee). Also uses the same refrain as Velvet Underground's "White Light/White Heat". All around fun.

90. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club-Bad Blood

A hazy and desperate rhythm lay the background for this bummed out rocker. Then the shimmering and pounding guitars propel things forward to the drugged chorus "I can see it in your eyes and now it's gone..." It's the basic BRMC blueprint for they're best songs. The album, "Beat The Devil's Tattoo", grew on me as the year went on, "Bad Blood" being my the haunting favorite.

89. Caribou-Kaili

From the lyrics, "Kaili" is another relationship song about a couple growing old together. Musically, it's a space trance sensation. Together, with the little flute and sax samples that litter "Swim", it becomes a thing of ethereal wonder. "Ooh, Ooh, See I Should Soon" is what Daniel Snaith repeats in the chorus and your stuck in the web of this song.

88. Frightened Rabbit-Skip The Youth

I remember lying upside down on a lounge chair at the Golden Nugget with a bucket of beer beside me staring into the June sun when the pulsating opening of "Skip The Youth" led me to do nothing but stare into the sun for the next six minutes. What a feeling. And how about the first two minutes being the best intro to any stadium concert you've ever been to? (Not that Frightened Rabbit have made it that far yet).

86. The Drums-Book Of Stories

So simple, lyrics so juvenile "I don't understand anymore/You don't love me anymore", all leading to a glorious chorus "I thought my life would get easier....instead it's getting harder" accompanied with a New Order keyboard. Wimpy, adolescent love songs always find a backdoor into your heart.

84. Wild Nothing-Drifter

The first time I heard the intro to "Drifter", I thought I stumbled across a Cure b-side. From the Robert Smith like guitar intro, to the shimmering eighties keys, to the Boris Williams' like drum fills. Then Jack Tatum's dreamy vocals took center stage and I was like, oh, not the Cure, but something just as good.

83. Woods-Blood Dries Darker

A song reminding you of lost time and a stirring chorus "Numbers make no difference unless you shine, like you should." And that main guitar line is absolute sixties folk rock. One of the best reflective pieces of music on 2010.

82. The National-England

"You must be somewhere in London, You must be loving your life in the rain." The National then pick up the drums horns and whatever else they can throw into the mix with Matt Berninger repeating "Afraid of the house/Stay the night with the sinners...cause they're desperate to entertain." A song of a lost love, transported to England, and the consequences Berninger faces back home, alone. Another National anthem.

81. Jonsi-Boy Lilikoi

A million bright and wonderful instruments all coming at you at once to a euphoric climax of Jonsi belting out "Your spirit is so grand/So life goes on...You are!" Simply magnificent.
