Midway through a solo acoustic version of ?Good Arms vs. Bad Arms,? Frightened Rabbit frontman/ well-bearded folkie Scott Hutchison?s acoustic guitar popped, sprung, and then went soundless. The crowd murmured, Scott looked down at his guitar, and sang the next line a cappela, to the tremendous applause of the audience. We all joined in of course, getting through the second verse of the song along with Scott as he and a roadie fiddled with a new guitar?s strap and cappo. And somehow miraculously, right after the tremendous, iconic ?I might not want you back but I want to kill him!? (which was yelled with an added ferocity,) the sound powered up and his shattering downstrum returned, leading the outdoor Stubb?s stage into one of the most raucous choruses any man with an acoustic guitar could incite. It was one of those magical moments that could only occur in a live setting, and it only makes sense it would happen with a band like Frightened Rabbit. A lesser batch of performers would let the moment hang in unplanned awkwardness ? but these guys are too ragged, too anthemic, and straight-up too emotionally driven to let that happen. Pain and passion becomes music ? our hearts are wrenched, our tears are jerked, but our fists are pumping and our feet are stomping, and words like ?You put the blood to my blue lips, Forced the life through my still veins, Filled my heart with red again? makes perfect sense.
