Album Review: Matt White?s ?It?s the Good Crazy?

With 11 tracks of infectious falsetto and defined soul, Matt White impresses on sophomore release, It?s the Good Crazy. From the very first track, ?And the Beat Goes On? White manages to capture the listener's undivided attention with his powerful singing, piano playing and whistling. The versatility between each song on the LP electrifies as it's nearly impossible to predict what will come next.

Catchy songs like first single, "Falling In Love (With My Best Friend)" are instantly likable and easy to picture heard on Top 40 radio while the sexy "She's On Fire" offers surprising diversity with a seductive beat matched well with White's deep vocals.

The slower "Taking On Water" follows "She's On Fire" and embodies lyrics that are bound to make every girl's heart swoon. "It's your eyes that keep me hanging around/Make me drive all night to get to your house," he sings over light percussion and acoustic guitar accompaniment.

While White demonstrates his ability to be more serious on a number of ballads throughout his LP, it's on more playful tracks like the 70s influenced "Teacher Teacher" that showcase his talent best. Alternating between slower singing and belting the chorus, his transformation is impeccable. "Off My Wall" follows suit with higher vocals and slow groove building that is sure to bring even the shyest wallflower to the dance floor.

Overall, a remarkably solid release, White makes a name for himself on It's the Good Crazy. In an industry of predictability, White remains to stand out from the crowd.

Hello, as promised last week , some more psychobilly today..a highpowered aand subsequently colourful lifestyle-without the big bucks or press mosquitos..as such it is powered by the internal drive, with highly infective results....

xxxxx

Demented Are Go got their start in Penarth, South Wales, near Cardiff. Initially, the band was disorganised, with Mark Phillips or "Sparky" playing drums, Ant Thomas singing, a bass player with his hair dyed red, and a "rock icon" with a gold-top Les Paul guitar and leather keks on rhythm guitar. Dick, a veteran of the punk/pub rock circuits, joined the band in early 1983, reshuffled the line up . After six weeks of rehearsals, the band's first gig was third on the bill to a line-up of Crass-type anarchist bands at the Sea Lion in Penarth and was met with good reception. Several years of playing everywhere. They recorded two songs for their first release on a 1984 compilation, Hell's Bent On Rockin' from Nervous Records, a well known record label in the psychobilly scene. They released their first album, In Sickness & In Health, on ID Records, which was recorded in less than 24 hours with 90% first takes, with Ray Thompson on bass. The core members at this time remained Mark, Ant and Dick.

The band moved to London in 1986 in an attempt to be closer to regular work. Dick left in 1987 after continuing frustration with the direction the band was taking. Undeterred, the then new double bass player and song writer graeme grant, recruited lex"luther to replace Dick. This was followed with their second full-length Kicked Out of Hell album that reached high positions in the indie charts both here and abroad in 1988. The band began extensively touring Europe and gained both a psychobilly and punk rock following. At this point, the lead singer, Sparky, became addicted to Psychoactive drugs(LSD) and alcohol. At this point Graeme and Lex both left the band at the end of 89, Lex rejoined the band only after a short break."Billy Munster" was to replace graeme on double bass.

In 1990, the band went back to the studio, though without any songs. They were able to write and record an EP for Link Records, The Day the Earth Spat Blood, within the span of three days. The band went on another European tour in 1991, writing and recording their next full-length for [Fury Records], Orgasmic Nightmare. In 1992 The band would tour almost constantly for the next two years. A second album for Fury Records, Tangenital Madness On A Pleasant Side Of Hell, was recorded in 1993, followed by two tours in Japan. The band was infamous for Sparky showing up to Japanese performances naked and doing strange things with a rubber fish...!

During a tour in Germany in spring 1995, the band broke up due to Sparky's deteriorating mental state. However, in 1996, Demented are Go reformed to release the EP'I Wanna See You Bleed! for Hell Razor Records. The band then toured the west coast of the United States U.S. in 1997. They would again be known more for their wild stage show, which included on-stage sex with vacuum cleaner".The band released the full-length Hellucifernation for Crazy Love Records in 1999. A tour went sour after Sparky ended up on jail, having pinched a minor and unable to cough up bail.

After a month in jail and a $100 fine, Sparky returned to England where the Demented Are Go line-up underwent numerous changes. They played two U.S. tours and recorded a live album, Live at the Galaxy, for Crazy Love Records as well as many European festival appearances. However, in the summer of 2003, Sparky was arrested numerous times on the road, resulting in more line-up changes. At the beginning of the 2006 U.S. tour, Sparky was detained by U.S. immigration authorities due to his criminal history, and he was sent back to England. The U.S. tour was cancelled but Demented Are Go still played shows in Europe.

Hello, obviously it aint always easy on what to post, yes after 4,5 years there's still plenty but considering 9 out of 50 Rhotation-Aetix were culled it shows some out there are desperate to keep those remasterings on sale. Afterall as a regular fan, after the vinyl and the cd now you are expected to pay once again, sometimes 'enhanced' with some leftovers..yippiee ! It's interesting to see also how many 80's independent labels have been bought up for next to nothing by the big and dirty boys, specially EMI has been active there..fact that they themselves have been basicly bankrupt for two years only motivates them to bully the little guy. Anyone got a billion dollars in their piggybank should consider buying them and revolutinze the socalled industry and proclaim "we are happy our artists get the attention of downloaders, we will no longer produce hard copies but sell directly thru our download servers diverse compression formats and uncompressed work at various prices max 6 dollars for a full album with full artwork and printfiles"... Hey but that's just me talking what do i know of overhead..hmm

Bauhaus formed in 1978 in Northampton, England. Guitarist/vocalist Daniel Ash, bassist/vocalist David J (born David Jay Haskins), and drummer Kevin Haskins had played together as a trio called the Craze before forming Bauhaus with vocalist Peter Murphy. Originally, the band was called Bauhaus 1919 after the German art movement; by 1979, they had dropped the 1919 from their name.

In August of 1979, the group released their debut single, "Bela Lugosi's Dead," on the independent record label Small Wonder Records. Although it did not make the pop charts, it became the de facto goth rock anthem, staying in the U.K. independent charts for years. Three months later, the group signed with Beggars Banquet's subsidiary label, 4AD. The group's second single, "Dark Entries," was released in January 1980. Following their first European tour, Bauhaus released their third single, "Terror Couple Kill Colonel," in the summer of that year, which became a hit on the indie charts.

After touring America for the first time in September, the group released a version of T. Rex's "Telegram Sam." In October, they released their debut album, In the Flat Field, which reached number one on the independent charts In October 81.
Few debut albums ever arrived so nearly perfectly formed; that In the Flat Field practically single-handedly invented what remains for many as the stereotype of goth music -- wracked, at times spindly vocals about despair and desolation of many kinds, sung over mysterious and moody music -- demonstrates the sui generis power of both the band and its work. This said, perhaps the best thing about the album isn't what it's supposed to sound like, but what it actually does -- an awesomely powerful, glam-inspired rock band firing on all fours, capable of restraint and complete overdrive both, fronted by a charismatic, storming frontman. In the Flat Field propelled Bauhaus' career with a near-perfect bang.

They released their second album, Mask, which revealed a more ambitious musical direction; the new direction, which featured elements of metal and electronic sonic textures, made the music more accessible without abandoning the dark, foreboding core of their music. Mask was a commercial success. Fall 82, the group had a hit with their version of David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust." The success of the single propelled their third album, The Sky's Gone Out on the album charts.

Murphy contracted pneumonia at the beginning of 1983, which prevented him from participating in the recording sessions for Bauhaus' fourth album, Burning From the Inside. Consequently, the record featured substantial contributions from Ash and J, who both pursued more personal and atmospheric directions. After Murphy recovered, the band toured Japan and then returned to the U.K. to promote the summer release of Burning From the Inside. The album was another hit, yet in July, Bauhaus split up.

After Bauhaus' breakup, Murphy formed Dali's Car with Japan's Mick Karn and then pursued a solo career. Ash continued with Tones on Tail, a project he began in 1981; Kevin Haskins also joined the band after Bauhaus' split. J made some solo records and joined the Jazz Butcher briefly. Ash, Haskins, and J formed Love and Rockets in 1985 after a proposed Bauhaus reunion fell apart because Peter Murphy wasn't interested in the project. More than a decade later, however, with the careers of both Love and Rockets and Peter Murphy at a standstill, Bauhaus re-formed for several live dates in Los Angeles, mounting a full-blown tour in 1998; the two-disc Gotham documented the reunited group's performance at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom.

Bauhaus reunited again in 2005, Bauhaus embarked on a full tour beginning in North America and Mexico in the Autumn of 2005 and ending in Europe in February 2006. In May 2006 the band toured with Nine Inch Nails on the summer leg of their tour. ?Go Away White? was recorded in 18 days at Zircon Skye in Ojai, with singer Peter Murphy, bassist David J, guitarist Daniel Ash, and drummer Kevin Haskins playing together as a band in one room, taking first takes as final cuts. So, a new record but apparently a final one, the band having decided to release it as a posthumous swan song....no news since.

Beady Eye 'Different Gear, Still Speeding' Mojo Review

These days Liam Gallagher calls big brother Noel ?the little fella? and his new band heralds the post-Oasis era. But is this vehicle built for joyriding or a long run?

Key tracks (Bring The Light, Wind Up Dream, The Beat Goes On)

3 STARS

IN WHAT seems an eternity ago, but was actually just summer 2008, Oasis appointed their latest drummer, Chris Sharrock, much to the annoyance of Liam Gallagher. According to elder brother Noel, the Oasis singer was disgruntled that his band had been reduced to hiring a former employee of Robbie Williams. Presumably Gallagher Jr mellowed his opinion once he stood on-stage amidst the gyroscopic eruption of his new colleague?s playing on The Shock of the Lightning. Or perhaps he remembered that Sharrock had been a member of The La?s just long enough to play on There She Goes, and also appeared in that song?s sweet video; this man was channelling the urchin rocker spirit of The Beatles when Liam was still at school.

A consensus maintains that Sharrock was the most talented occupant of the Oasis drum stool, and now at last he?s played on his first album with the band. Well, almost. The notion of Beady Eye as simply a Liam Gallagher solo vehicle looks shaky when held against the continuity of the group?s membership. With Sharrock joining Liam, Gem Archer and Andy Bell, this band is Oasis, albeit minus the substantial element of Noel Gallagher: songwriter, guitarist, The Chief. Having disparaged his sibling?s character throughout their turbulent journey ? the gist essentially being that Noel?s a boring muso, but I?m mad for it ? now it is Liam?s chance to step outside big brother?s shadow and shyeeeiiine.

He?s done a decent job. Though wholly conformist and unlikely to surprise anyone familiar with its creators? previous activity, Different Gear, Still Speeding does boast three strokes of brilliance. First off, there?s the title, which Liam suggests Liam possesses more self-deprecating humour than he?s given credit for: look, I might be 38 but I?ve got a new band and I?m still mad for it. Then the nutty cover art: a picture of a child riding an alligator, with the title in speech bubbles. Mocked up to resemble a hippy era samizdat journal, or perhaps a Frank Zappa sleeve, it?s a cut above the boil-in-the-bag retro of innumerable Oasis designs, and indeed, Liam?s Pretty Green clothes label. Finally, we have the single, Bring The Light. Until a year ago Liam was declaring his intent to call this band Oasis, and on this evidence it would not have disgraced that band?s legacy had he done so. Bring The Light has exactly the unselfconscious brio and contempt for the cool school rule-book that defined Oasis in their pomp. The primeval rock ?n? roll piano and Sharrock?s fervent snare shots taunt those disposed to sober bystanding, and instead the listener is dragged into line with Gallagher?s tunnel vision logic: ?I see no point/In what you?re thinking/I?m going out/I?m taking you drinking?. Only a fool could argue with that. The contrast between this compact but nippy run-around and some of the ponderous gas-guzzlers Liam was obliged to front on Dig Out Your Soul, the final Oasis album, is glaring.

Then again, you don?t have to subject the Beady Eye debut to a full body scan to realise Noel Gallagher hardly foisted his grand musical vision on an unwilling workforce. There is actually a song here called Beatles and Stones, sounding like a mini-me version of The Who in R&B kickabout mode. The epic closer, The Morning Son, has a line beginning ?So let it be??, and is a dopey lope through the punning possibilities of its title, wrapped around a melody which refracts The Jam?s English Rose through the glissandos of a rent-a-trip string section. Before sliding into a sleazy stack-heeled refrain, The Roller mimics Instant Karma with the sort of obstinate intensity to be expected from a man who named a son Lennon. These reflexive testimonials to the golden age of Brit-beat and its lysergic aftermath smother the album, with too few songs possessing the transcendent qualities to counteract the balm of dj vu.

Some basic editing might have helped: with 13 tracks and a running time eight minutes shy of an hour, Different Gear, Still Speeding, badly loses momentum in its final third. But amid the soft-rock platitudes (Wigwam) and leaden rabble-rousing (Standing On The Edge Of The Noise), there?s real inspiration, when windy rhetoric is dumped for simple, spring-heeled arrangements suggesting a strong bond between the musicians and producer Steve Lillywhite. Wind Up Dream has a spacey hand-jive groove with a whiff of The Stooge?s Penetration. Millionaire delivers a zestful acoustic twang and eyebrow-raising lyrical references to the Catalonian town Figueres and its most famous son, Salvador Dali. Equally deft is the lovely Macca-pop swing of For Anyone. These latter two compositions demonstrate that Liam Gallagher is as effective in the role of tender supplicant as when squaring up or out on the lash.

Indeed, his soppy side dictates a song which, though preposterous, is one of the record?s definitive moments. The Beat Goes On feels faintly comedic in its unabashed evocation of Mellotronic Fabness ? imagine The Wombles in Pepperland (full page caricature of Beady Eye as Wombles in Pepperland with Noel as Uncle Bulgaria in the background!!!!!). The lyrics paint a no less absurd picture: the narrator dreams his own death and arrives in heaven for ?the gig in the sky? to discover ?The Ox and the Moon?counting me in?; on realising he?s still alive, he announces, ?I?m misunderstood/And wasted on money and fame/I?ll throw it away, just to prove that I can??. This is cogent, reflective songwriting, and such is the singer?s ingenuous zeal that any impulse to snigger is ultimately undercut by something closer to respect.

Throughout the record, Gallagher demonstrates yet again his infernal gift for singing: even a weak tune is better for him at the mike, and though there were times with Oasis when his waywardness clearly destabilised proceedings, the extent to which that band depended for its impact upon a fully-engaged Liam was beyond doubt. Here the man?s commitment is total, and such is his eternal saving grace. Anyone searching for clues to a future peace deal with brother Noel will take solace in the brooding, not-at-all-unlike-Oasis anthemics of Kill For A Dream: over portentous strings Liam declares, ?Life?s too short not to forgive/You can carry regrets but they won?t let you live/I?m here if you wanna call??.

In the context of the Gallagher soap opera, this is serious stuff. In the real world, it?s merely a passable song on a debut album that shapes up better than many imagined. Whether Liam Gallagher?s band is the start of a new story or a diverting subplot to an on-going saga remains to be seen ? and you can imagine where the smart money lies. But already, amid the righteous ramalama of Bring The Light, their genius move, the world?s a brighter place for having a Beady Eye.

The Pillbugs Jenny Owen Youngs Stars Primal Scream

CD Review: Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes

Social Distortion's new album was released yesterday, November 18, 2011 by Epitaph Records. I can not tell you how eagerly I was awaiting the release of this album. I could not wait to get to the store yesterday morning to rip the wrapping off this CD and pop in my CD player. Social Distortion with a new album AND released by Epitaph Records! What could be more exciting?!?

And then......I listened to it.

Let me start off by saying that this is not a bad album, musically. The songs on it are decent. Well-polished, well-written. Good songs.

However, I do not think they belong on a Social Distortion release.

I think they might have been better off perhaps as another Mike Ness solo album but certainly not a Social Distortion album.

Overall, I am kind of disappointed with the album. It is not the best album that Mike and Co could have released to follow up such great albums as Sex, Love and Rock n Roll and White Light, White Heat, White Trash.

My problem with it is that I don't think the songs really...well...they just didn't really "rock" as much as I was hoping. I think that Mike has probably mellowed out a bit too much for my taste. I guess the fact that he is getting close to 50 might have a little bit to do with it.

In any case, as I said, the songs on it are decent songs. I just don't think this is a good Social Distortion release. As a big Social D fan, I feel like I have been let down. I put my hopes up way too high I suppose.

I dunno. Listen to it for yourself. Maybe you won't be as disappointed in it as I am.

VV Brown Fat Tulips Farrah The Good Life

Oh Liam, Beady Eye is not what we needed

Okay so I am an OASIS fan. I have enjoyed their work even if it was at times derivitive of THE BEATLES. It was kind of the collective deal we made with them. The Beatles were gone and Oasis was what they could have been if technology had allowed Lennon and McCartney to blast the volume up to 11. When Noel and Liam Gallegher announced that they had had enough of each other (talk about awkward Christmas moments) we all thought Noel would be the one to go on to some form of new career. After all he was largely credited with the success of the band as the principle song writer and musical genius (similar to what PAUL WELLER has done with his time.)

So along comes BEADY EYE. For those who don't know, this is the rest of OASIS as imagined by Liam Gallagher. He has taken the reigns of the songwriting and singing all the songs. Of what I have heard (about four songs), I can say it is now clear that Noel was in fact the driving force. Beady Eye's songs not just mimic The Beatles, they openly ape even the post fab four with nods to JONH LENNON'S solo work as well as WINGS. "The Roller" has all the markings of "Let It Be" era musical cadences mashed up with "Instant Karma's" pacing. "Four Letter Word" opens with "Live and Let Die" flourishes before settling in to another Oasis style rock song. "Bring The Light" is Liam's ode to early Beatles as a rockabiliy act.

(I can say that I listened to these songs more than once before writing this and at one point thought about skipping this whole enterprise in it's entirety.)

It's not that the music is bad. The work is very well played and very professional. It's just so devoid of any individual voice. It's more like a cover band than a genuine muiscal entity. Maybe the full length will be better. Let's just say at this point I'm not holding out much hope.
(I don't feel right offering up a song. If you're interested I'm sure they are available in various places.)

Holler! - Holler!

Holler! ? Holler!
2009, Holler!
Holler! Is an classic-style Americana band based in Tel Aviv, Israel that has been lighting up stages in Israel since their inception in 2006.  In 2009 the band released their self-titled debut album, blending blues, folk, southern rock and bluegrass in a distinctive style that grabs you.  Holler! Has its highs and lows in the songwriting department.  At their best, Holler! Displays a sort of quiet, catchy nature, as seen on songs such as ?Where Are You Going (My Love)?, ?Deserted? and ?Sweet & Sour?.  Vocalist David Bernay is very talented and could easily front larger bands on larger stages.  Holler! Is a solid effort, but listeners may get the feeling that this is a band pushing at its own limits.

The first single from the album, "Gateways", was released on August 20 in Europe and August 24 in North America. Cradle Of Filth - Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa (2010)

Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa is the ninth studio album by English extreme metal band Cradle of Filth.

Review by a fan:
There are musical formulas that never become exhausted. Bands that choose such formulas as basis for their works enjoy long-lasting, successful careers. No fan requires any change in their musical direction, everyone is universally happy if such a band releases another album that fits into the band's template. Among classic bands that fit this description are AC/DC, Motrhead, Slayer, to name just a few that immediately spring to mind.

Marie Glad ? Bedroom Stories, Part One

Marie Glad ? Bedroom Stories, Part One
2010, Royal Sister
Marie Glad is a Swedish singer, songwriter, visual artist, designer, film maker and yoga instructor.  That?s enough vocations to prove a point of some sort.  As a singer/songwriter Glad  saw moderate success with her 2009 debut album Rescue Me.  She returned in 2010 with a four-song EP entitled Bedroom Stories, Part One.  The EP is full of bland, fluffy pop music that?s easily convertible to the dance scene with the appropriate remixes.  Glad has a nice enough voice, but the material presented here is the musical equivalent of empty calories.  The peak of the EP comes on the lack track, a second version of the song ?Butterfly? featuring Duvestar.  Duvestar is a partnership between Glad and Irish DJ/producer Oisin Lunny (U2, Gangstarr, Sinead O?Connor).  There are points of promise here, but little is truly realized.

The Concretes, All Day

Since Lisa Milberg took over lead vocals for Swedish pop outfit The Concretes in 2006 (when original lead vocalist Victoria Bergsman left to devote her time to her own solo project, Taken By Trees), she's taken vocal duties towards a slightly more sultry direction, the music also following suit IMO as illustrated by a few of the songs below (off the band's newest album WYWH, released late last year):

And via The Line Of Best Fit the band perform an acoustic version of "My Ways" as part of TLOBF Sessions

The band just kicked off their North American tour (check out their dates at their MySpace) and will be in Toronto this Monday January 17 for a show at the Horseshoe Tavern with openers Hooray For Earth.

2005- Arcade Fire - Funeral (released in 2004)

By 2005, I was firmly entrenched in the indie music internet subculture. I was checking music review sites like Pitchfork on a daily basis and eagerly previewing new albums from buzz bands. I was also regularly patrolling my local Cheapo Records for used copies of albums so I wouldn't break the bank to get my fix.

As I was reading through Pitchfork's annual year end list of 2004, I found that I had not yet listened to the album they ranked as the best release of 2004: Funeral by Arcade Fire. One gripe that I had and have about Pitchfork is their propensity to rate debut albums extremely high just because they are new and fresh-sounding. The bands often turn out to be flashes in the pan whose sophomore releases reveal that they are indeed still amateurs. I figured this was probably the case with Arcade Fire, an upstart band from the oh-so-trendy Canadian large-group rock scenes that happened to get lots of blog coverage that year. When I found their album on sale at Cheapo, I decided to take a chance on it.

Funeral turned out to be a fantastic album. Arcade Fire boasts 7-ish members and utilizes a myriad of unique instrumentation to pull off their dense songs. This album was recorded as a sort of reaction to the deaths of a few people close to members of the band. The songs were primarily recorded over the course of only about a week. Taken together, the album is a tour de force of dramatic and cataclysmic songs that soar and crash over and over again. It has a triumphant feel to it even as the lyrics often sound mournful of losses sustained.

My personal favorite moment of this album has to be the song "Wake Up". I love the opening guitar chords that lead into a harp run and a huge vocal ensemble. From there the song drops into the verse, but maintains the march before climbing back up the mountain to the soaring choir. It's an amazingly empowering song and one that I specially chose to have played as the church was being dismissed following our wedding.

At the time of it's release, I was fairly confident that this band would not be flash in the pan and I was correct; Arcade Fire's second album proved to be every bit as good as it's first. In the era of hyperbole and instant history, good bands earn favor by being consistent in their craft and not just by having a popular debut. Pitchfork got this album's ranking right, but that doesn't happen as often as they'd like to think. There is no substitute for hearing and evaluating an album yourself on it's own merit. In the case of Funeral, I find it's one of those rare albums that gets better each time I listen to it. In other words, unlike most "Pitchfork Approved" albums, this one will have a long shelf life.
