2001 - Coldplay - Parachutes (released in 2000)

In the summer of 2001, I started hearing this song on the radio called ?Yellow?. I remember finding it very ear-catching because of its brit-pop feel, falsetto vocals and almost out of tune guitar sound. I liked it more the more times I heard it (this was before the song was overplayed to death). I decided that I?d go purchase the actual album by this band and see what I thought. This is the first time I can remember buying an album based on liking a radio single.

In 2001, Coldplay was a baby band. Chris Martin had not yet met Gwyneth Paltrow and the band wasn?t a stadium act just yet. They were actually more of a small club kind of band and Parachutes depicts that feel very well (which is why this might be my favorite album of theirs). As is often the case, the lead single feels three feet taller than the rest of the songs. The bulk of the set is dominated by subtle, softer songs. The drums swish in the background as Martin carefully croons and the guitar slides around lazily.

These are also some of the best written songs we?ve ever gotten from the band. The opening track, ?Don?t Panic?, relies on a prototypical Martin-style lyric of ?We live in a beautiful world?, but it doesn?t seem contrived ? perhaps because it?s our first encounter with his ?eternally hopeful? vibe. The closer goes there too, proclaiming ?everything?s not lost?. In between, however, we?ve got melancholy songs like ?Spies? which starts with the lyric ?I awake to find no peace of mind?. Then there?s ?Trouble? and ?Sparks?, both of which lament a lost love and offer no clear resolution.

As if often the case when one buys an album based on a radio single, I initially just listened to ?Yellow? over and over again. Soon, however, I grew to really appreciate the rest of the album. I love the chill vibe that resonates from this disc. From here, the band soared to incredibly high heights of popularity based on epic arrangements and stadium concerts. They became one of the biggest bands on the world, which is why hearing them in this setting seems so quaint now; yet this may be my favorite album of theirs. I like the fact that they aren?t relying on bombastic, soaring choruses to encompass the listeners. They were playing their songs shyly. Attention had yet to be earned and that made the album more earnest and genuine.

I still like Coldplay quite a bit. I almost lost confidence in them when their X&Y album came out and was extremely boring. Viva la Vida boasted Brian Eno as producer and was as solid album throughout, but I fear that the days of the band playing small, soft songs is gone and may never return. And that?s a shame because they did it so well.

Jeff Cochell - Between The Lines

Portland, Oregon guitarist/singer/songwriter Jeff Cochell was first influenced by the work of Bob Dylan and Jimmy Page.  Somewhere along the way he discovered Lindsay Buckingham and Leo Kottke, and dove headfirst into the study of Fingerstyle guitar.  Cochell has become a phenom with the six string; his art clearly apparent throughout his debut album, Between The Lines.

Between The Lines is a confounding album.  Jeff Cochell is obviously very talented on the guitar, a notable point all throughout the album.  As much as Cochell excels as a guitar player and composer, as a lyricist he is often awkward in his phrasing, seeking out ham-handed lines that simple do not flow.  Cochell is at his best in "My Back's Against The Wall", using vocal harmonies to effectively mask a lack of vocal discipline that often leads to being off pitch while delivering the most cogent lyrics on the album.  "Somewhere" stresses Cochell's strengths as a guitarist in a stirring instrumental piece you'll find yourself listening to again and again.     Throughout much of the rest of Between The Lines Cochell mixes solid musical offerings with less than spectacular vocals and lyrics.

Jeff Cochell has a real ear as a writer and instrumentalist, and it's clear that in the right arrangement with a carefully chosen vocal line Cochell can sound quite good, but his fumbling lyrical sense is a definite disadvantage.  Working with someone for a more natural poetic proclivity may yield an impressive trove of songs as well as sparking the sort of constructive tension that can elevate good songwriting to great.  Between The Lines shows the seeds of musical success, but work needs to be done and Cochell may need to collaborate to realize the best of his talents.

In this dark comedy Winona plays Veronica Sawyer, friend of the "Heathers," a group of popular high school girls that in reality she can't stand.

Christian Slater plays J.D. who helps her "take care of" the Heathers.

This film also stars Shannon Doherty in a pre-90210 role as one of the Heathers.

Dracula (1992)

Interesting that I just watched this movie last night.

It is directed by Francis Ford Coppola and also stars Gary Oldman in the title role, Anthony Hopkins as Professor Van Helsing, Keanu Reeves as Jonathan Harker, Carl Ewles, and Tom Waits.

Reality Bites (1994)

This film was directed by Ben Stiller, who also starred in the movie. Also starring in the movie were Ethan Hawke, Janeane Garafalo, Steve Zahn, Joe Don Baker, Renee Zellwegger, Andy Dick, and Keith David.

This film had an awesome soundtrack.

RICHARD DREYFUSS - Happy 63rd!

Moon Over Parador (1988)

This movie reminds me a bit of the Kevin Kline movie Dave, or vice versa actually since this one came out first.

Richard plays a double role as actor Jack Noah and President of the Latin American country (Parador) Alphonse Simms. In this film, which is actually a remake of a 1939 films called The Magnificent Fraud, actor Noah is on location in Parador filming a movie and the President dies. Because Noah looks so much like the President he is forced to pretend to be the President.

This film also stars Raul Julia, Dana Delany, and Jonathan Winters.

The American President (1995)

In this Rob Reiner political comedy, The American President is played by Michael Douglas and Richard plays his political rival, Senator Bob Rumson, a Republican Senator from Kansas.

This is an absolutely fantastic film. It was written by Aaron Sorkin who also wrote A Few Good Men and the screen play for Charlie Wilson's War (another flick I just recently watched). He is also the creator of the TV series The West Wing which was actually inspired by this film.

It also stars Annette Benning, Martin Sheen, and Michael J Fox.

W. (2008)

Richard plays an amazing role as the evil Vice President Dick Cheney (LoL, evil.) in this Oliver Stone political biography.

Josh Brolin, who plays the title character, also did a pretty good job. Also starring in this film are James Cromwell as George H.W. Bush (not sure if he was 100% right for that role), Scott Glenn as Donald Rumsfeld, Jeffrey Wright as General Colin Powell, and Noah Wyle as Donald Evans, among many others.

2000- Waterdeep - Live at the New Earth (released in 1998)

2000 was a big year. It was the year I graduated from high school and moved to the Twin Cities for college. Between those two big events, I spent my second summer working at Inspiration Point Christian Camp and Retreat Center. While there, my friend Phil V. turned me on to a Christian band called Waterdeep. He told me that they were one of the best Christian bands out there and I had to give them a listen. After camp, I did give them a listen. Phil advised me to start with Waterdeep's live album: Live at the New Earth, so I picked up the album soon after coming home from camp. 

Waterdeep is a band headed up by Don and Lori Chaffer. They were based out of Kansas City, though the Chaffers have recently relocated to the music mecca that is Nashville. In 1998 the band was a touring machine, hitting music festivals all over the country and building an incredibly strong grassroots fanbase. Their lives shows were being taped and traded on the internet and people were calling them the Christian equivalent to Phish. Crazy. They finally signed to Steve Taylor's ill-fated record label Squint Entertainment (the same label home of Burlap to Cashmere and Sixpence None the Richer) in 1998. Squint eventually collapsed (a long story for another day) and Waterdeep found themselves indie again, which suits them much better anyway.

Live at the New Earth is an absolutely phenomenal album. The band lineup has changed throughout the years, but this cast has to be one of the best. The style of the album is classic rock with a gospel flavor and the technical prowess is outstanding. Don Chaffer blazes through huge guitar solos, Lori sings her heart out, Brandon Graves drumming is devastatingly good and the bass and keyboard work at highlighted in the various sections of extended jams. This album contains such live show staples at "Gospel Train" and "Come to Me", each of which build to big finishes. As the album goes on, we move into more subtle songs like "18 Bullet Holes" and "I'm Afraid that I'm Not Supposed to Be Like This" before the set comes to a climatic finish with the brooding worship tune "Holy". It's an absolutely perfect live album.

This album showed me what Christian music is supposed to be. The musicians were actually extremely talented and were not afraid to showcase that talent. The lyrical subject matter wasn't happy-go-lucky all the time; Don penned songs about struggling with understanding suffering and feeling lost in the world. I think that's what really drew me to the band. They didn't ignore the difficult times that Christians still face. While most popular Christian artists tend to promote a brand of Christianity that all about "positivity", this band was quick to point out that Christians still feel lonely sometimes and fear that they are broken beyond repair and that's okay to feel. 

Waterdeep is now one of my absolute favorite bands and they are still putting out incredibly good music. After an extended break from 2002-2007 they've released 3 albums in the last 3 years. In fact, their 13th proper album made my top 25 list in 2009! Picking a favorite album of theirs is a tall order, but I come back to this album very regularly and find it fulfilling each and every time I listen.

It's been nigh a year since I first posted about The Motorcycle Industry, and this new EP brings even more of the slacker-voiced punk band.

Name dropping The Knitting Factory, super fuzzed-out synthesizers, summer beards, and pretending to like hip-hop are just some of the high points of the 4-song EP.  At times reminiscent of Fountains of Wayne, Stereophonics, or Say Anything, this is some good-times rock to get you through until summer.

Slayer, Seasons in the Abyss

Well, well. This is ?the? Slayer disc. All of Slayer?s previous albums had been about one thing: speed (With the possible exception of South of Heaven). So this album was a bit of a shocker. You still get the trademark Slayer hyper-riffing. Same all out attack on the drums. Some unholy/I?m coming to kill you lyrics.

However on certain songs Slayer tone the speed down. The songs are still powerful, just not ?in-your-face.? Some of the songs are more of a mid-tempo thrash (Expendable Youth). The title track even has *gasp* melody. As always with any Slayer record you will get the trademark Slayer solo, as well. The last great disc Slayer put out.

Mike Farris - The Night The Cumberland Came Alive

Mike Farris first caught the public eye as front man for The Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies.  He went on to perform with CSW, Peaceful Knievel and Double Trouble (Stevie Ray Vaughan's band) before becoming a practicing Christian and rejecting his former lifestyle.  In the time since, Farris has become a highly lauded performer in Gospel music, blending Americana, folk and blues into the mix.  His album Salvation In Lights made numerous critics lists in 2007, and Farris has been a regular performer in Nashville and at major festivals ever since.  Like so many others, Farris was deeply affected by last year's "thousand year flood" in Nashville and its environs.  On October 26, 2010, Farris releases The Night The Cumberland Came Alive", a six song EP that commemorates the event and celebrates the revitalization of the entire area.

Recorded just weeks after the flood, The Night The Cumberland Came Alive boasts an all-star cast of musicians, including Sam Bush; Kenny Vaughan (Marty Stuart); Old Crow Medicine Show's Ketch Secor and Gill Landy, The McCrary Sisters, Byron House (Robert Plant) and members of Farris' Roseland Rhythm Revue.  The EP opens with the title track.  Written about the flood and its aftermath, "The Night The Cumberland Came Alive" is pure pre-war Americana and Gospel and is full of the sort of energy that can only be inspired by great tragedy and triumph.  "Wrapped Up, Tangled Up" is a witness song in the Southern Gospel tradition.  Farris is amazing on vocals here in a powerful and moving arrangement.  "Down On Me" blends blues, folk and gospel in an inspired if somewhat tempered rendition.  Farris and Ketch Secor wrote "Dear Lazarus" just days before the EP was recorded.  The cut offered here gets a bit busy at times, but was essentially a jam.  Exuberance aside, you can hear the magic in the moment of the song.  "Mother Earth" is a song of humility in the face of then-recent events, a reminder that people spring forth from the earth and in time owe themselves back to whence they came.  Farris closes with "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me", an inspired tune and great close to what must have been a magical experience.

The Night The Cumberland Came Alive reflects the joy and thankfulness of a people who have stared destruction in the face and lived to talk about it.  It's a transitive moment and one that is captured in fine form by Mike Farris and friends.  This EP is a gift to all humanity, not so much even for the music but because it captures the moment so perfectly and completely.  That's not a knock on the songs on The Night The Cumberland Came Alive; the entire EP is a first class listening experience.  This one's special.

More often than not bands tour to promote a new release but sometimes they tour for touring's sake such as the case with Tucson's Calexico who stopped in Toronto for a show at the Phoenix Concert Theatre on July 22. Similarly, openers Toronto trio Elliott Brood aren't promoting a new release either but came out to open the show before working out their performance legs on their own tour jaunt.

It's surprising it took me so long to catch Toronto's Elliott Brood live, a career two albums in already, a band who's kicked around since releasing their first release, an EP, in 2004. The band consists of Casey Laforet on guitar / vocals, Stephen Pitkin on drums, and Mark Sasso on guitar / banjo / ukelele / vocals. For a Thursday night at the Phoenix there was a decent crowd yet still plenty of elbow space for both Elliott Brood's and Calexico's sets, providing some foot-stomping room for a few extroverted souls to cut loose, the rest of the crowd seemingly content to stand back and watch. It was a fairly satisfying set of roots-tinged songs, songs rooted in steady percussion and embellished with guitar, banjo and ukele and enthusiastic vocals. It's perhaps a formula destined for mundaneness but the Brood do experiment a bit with sonics in their guitar sound at times, but above all have a great catalogue of melodic tunes they're working with. It's these songs in a live setting which call for handclapping, foot stomping and singalongs such as their fantastic set closer "Miss You" which had the band repeating "I Miss You Now" accompanied along by a jaunty rhythm.

Tucson's Calexico have been one of those acts I've been meaning to catch live for some time now. I'd barely scratched the surface in even listening to them on record but they were always one of those bands that in theory I thought I might like a lot, having coloured their indie rock with a variety of influences including jazz, Americana, and mariachi. With horns, pedal steel guitar, vibraphone, and hand percussion making their way amidst the more conventional rock instrumentation, the band performed a varied sounding set from mariachi-influenced songs, to rootsy numbers and a few straight-ahead, guitar-driven indie rock blasts. It was the latter that I most identified with although it was the former[the mariachi/rootsy numbers] where the band really distinguishes themselves. With the press having described them as "desert noir" in the past, I always imagined a mystique surrounding the band but on the contrary they were quite ordinary guys and lead singer Joey Burns was open and friendly with crowd.

They thanked the crowd, who in my opinion seemed enthusiastic on the contrary to what chartattack said, with a couple of encores, the first with the band which included a Zorba-The-Greek-esque instrumental interlude joined onstage with Elliott Brood which segued into a poignant, twang-inflected cover of Neil Young's "Cortez The Killer". The 2nd encore seemed unplanned but given the sustained efforts from the crowd who remained, Joey and pedal steel guitarist Paul Niehaus came back onstage to perform the quieter, folky Bisbee Blue".

Beastie Boys Announce ?Hot Sauce Committee Part 2? Track Listing

Beastie Boys have unveiled the track listing for their forthcoming album, ‘Hot Sauce Committee Part 2‘.

The new album is set to include a track listing similar to ‘Hot Sauce Committee Part 1‘, which was originally due out last year but has now been delayed.

The forthcoming album will feature all the tracks originally set to appear in ‘Hot Sauce Committee Part 1‘ except for one track, ‘Bundt Cake‘.

The new album will have 16 tracks and is set for release Spring 2011.

I am beyond excited to announce that my site redesign will be complete next month! Wendy Hu (photographer and designer extraordinaire), Joel Brower (programmer guru) and I are working hard to migrate all the content and have the site fully functioning for my 3-year celebration November 12th at Southpaw in Brooklyn.

Since it's just under a month away, I'll be posting less frequently in order to make sure all the content is ready so follow me on Twitter for my up-to-the-minute adventures. With that said, feel free to read through past interviews (on the right sidebar) and I'll be back from time to time because I can't stop writing altogether!

I can't wait for my big bash November 12th. I've been putting together shows for the past two years, but this year is by far the most diverse lineup and showcases bands you NEED to know! We have a solid mix of hip-hop, folk, rock and pop artists that I really think you'll dig. Stay tuned for the official flier and for more info, check out the bands who will be playing below!

Sydney, Australia quartet The Jezabels have had a whirlwind year, landing opening gigs for artists such as Tegan & Sara, Katie Noonan and Josh Pyke while promoting their 2009 EP She's So Hard.  In the process The Jezabels grew into headliners themselves, selling some pretty impressive rooms along the way.  Led by vocalist Hayley Mary, The Jezabels bring an eclectic sound on their latest EP, Dark Storm, the last of an EP trilogy.

The EP opens with ?Dark Storm?, a stark and lovely tune with a disturbing edge.  The song has a hidden pop sensibility; it won?t necessarily be your favorite the first listen through but it is the song that will keep you coming back.  Vocalist Hayley Mary intrigues while sounding like a cross between Kate Bush and Stevie Nicks.  ?Mace Spray? is crunchy-but-ambient pop.  Hayley Mary?s vocal is distinctive and disturbing, full of an asymmetric beauty and a hard edge that?s sort of like chewing on tin foil.  ?Sahara Mahala? is an edgy pop love song with a serious hook and a deep sense of mystery.  ?A Little Piece goes a bit too far vocally, with Mary stretching for some soprano notes that were perhaps ill thought.  The Jezabels close with ?She?s So Hard?, a vocally intriguing but lyrically obtuse song that shows elements of Sarah McLachlan and Bjork.

The Jezabels show an intriguing mix of rock, pop and Lilith Fair pastiche on ?Dark Storm?, one of the more intriguing musical introductions we?ve made this year at Wildy?s World.  The EP itself has its ups and downs, but Hayley Mary has a voice that could become iconic.  Voice aside, there?s enough here to keep you in the loop enough to want to find out what The Jezabels do next.

CMJ Music Marathon - Official and Unofficial Parties

NYC-bound tomorrow and still in the midst of packing but I am looking forward to CMJ immensely. I'm a bit overwhelmed going through the CMJ schedule and deciding what to pick but fortunately I came across My Free Concert which has JUST ABOUT ALL the skinny on both official and unofficial parties happening during the CMJ Music Marathon this week. And not only that but My Free Concert have partnered with No Pulp Music to host their own 2-night [Tues Oct 19 & Fri Oct 22] shindig at Arlene's Grocery with a total of 16 bands over the two nights and My Free Concert is giving away goodie bags. I haven't even perused My Free Concert's CMJ links in depth - I have me some reading and RSVP'ing to do.

Rob Zombie has not only taken the imagined species of undead brains-fiends as his surname, but the revered artist also has his infamous moniker associated with one of the biggest horror movies ever (re)made: Halloween.

To further state the obvious, it's that time of year, and in keeping with Rob's affinity for horror films and zombies, The Daily Beast caught up with the singer/ director to get his list of classic zombie movies. 2005- Arcade Fire - Funeral (released in 2004)

By 2005, I was firmly entrenched in the indie music internet subculture. I was checking music review sites like Pitchfork on a daily basis and eagerly previewing new albums from buzz bands. I was also regularly patrolling my local Cheapo Records for used copies of albums so I wouldn't break the bank to get my fix. 

As I was reading through Pitchfork's annual year end list of 2004, I found that I had not yet listened to the album they ranked as the best release of 2004: Funeral by Arcade Fire. One gripe that I had and have about Pitchfork is their propensity to rate debut albums extremely high just because they are new and fresh-sounding. The bands often turn out to be flashes in the pan whose sophomore releases reveal that they are indeed still amateurs. I figured this was probably the case with Arcade Fire, an upstart band from the oh-so-trendy Canadian large-group rock scenes that happened to get lots of blog coverage that year. When I found their album on sale at Cheapo, I decided to take a chance on it. 

Funeral turned out to be a fantastic album. Arcade Fire boasts 7-ish members and utilizes a myriad of unique instrumentation to pull off their dense songs. This album was recorded as a sort of reaction to the deaths of a few people close to members of the band. The songs were primarily recorded over the course of only about a week. Taken together, the album is a tour de force of dramatic and cataclysmic songs that soar and crash over and over again. It has a triumphant feel to it even as the lyrics often sound mournful of losses sustained. 

My personal favorite moment of this album has to be the song "Wake Up". I love the opening guitar chords that lead into a harp run and a huge vocal ensemble. From there the song drops into the verse, but maintains the march before climbing back up the mountain to the soaring choir. It's an amazingly empowering song and one that I specially chose to have played as the church was being dismissed following our wedding. 

At the time of it's release, I was fairly confident that this band would not be flash in the pan and I was correct; Arcade Fire's second album proved to be every bit as good as it's first. In the era of hyperbole and instant history, good bands earn favor by being consistent in their craft and not just by having a popular debut. Pitchfork got this album's ranking right, but that doesn't happen as often as they'd like to think. There is no substitute for hearing and evaluating an album yourself on it's own merit. In the case of Funeral, I find it's one of those rare albums that gets better each time I listen to it. In other words, unlike most "Pitchfork Approved" albums, this one will have a long shelf life.

EIGHT SECONDS was a Canadian New Wave band formed back in 1982 in Ottawa, Canada composed of ANDRES DEL CASTILLO on lead vocals/guitar, MARK PARENT on guitars, FRANK LEVIN on keyboards, MARCH CESARE on bass, and SCOTT MILKS on drums. Well as the band name suggest, EIGHT SECONDS get's it done in a hurry. I'm glad to present you EIGHT SECONDS here in my little blog "The Doctor Is In"!! EIGHT SECONDS was first introduced here in MANILA back in 1986 by POWER 105 DZBM by playing the classic song "KISS YOU (WHEN IT'S DANGEROUS)". If you'll talk about the band here for deep PINOY NEW WAVERS then this gotta be the song that should be in their minds. It also invaded the 99.5 RT playlist too on 1987. POWER 105 DZBM then also introduced the next EIGHT SECONDS song on MANILA airwaves in 1988 with "WHERE'S BULA" but It didn't really made any impact for PINOY WAVERS back then. The song just disappeared into thin air which is in Pilipino " Nawala siya parang BULA." He He He!! Although EIGHT SECONDS hit the airwaves in Canada back in 1983 with this "Where's Bula" song via CHEZ 106 Sharechez '83 Homegrown contest, It never really got the needed song recall for the youngsters who loves listening to New Wave Music here in the Philippines back then. The band released three albums namely Ottava Rima (1985), Almacantar (1986), and Big Houses (1990).


EIGHT SECONDS' second album "ALMACANTAR" was released back in 1986. It was a 10 track album released on Polydor , a label now owned by Universal Music Canada, which included both POWER 105 DZBM classic "KISS YOU (WHEN IT'S DANGEROUS)" and "WHERE'S BULA". Although the band released three albums, "ALMACANTAR" would definitely be the album that every PINOY NEW WAVE collector should have in their music collection. I first bought the locally released Philippine Pressing of "Almacantar" Vinyl Record back then but decided to swap it for an Imported Pressing since the imported one has an inner sleeve which most local releases doesn't have. YUP!! That's my EIGHT SECONDS Vinyl Record on the photo still very well taken care of. This RUPERT HINE produced-album was the band's first full length album and their first international release billowing with rich textures yet streamlined by rhythmic toughness. Lead Vocalist ANDRES DEL CASTILLO was surprised, dazed, and blown away with the band's success in their homeland during those times. The band even won a Best Video Award from the Canadian Film And Television Association for "Where's Bula" in 1984 and a PROCAN Award for " Kiss You (When It's Dangerous)" in 1987 wherein both songs are included in this "Almacantar" album. Just to give credits on the great cover art on the album I decided to include the names of these people for my special EIGHT SECONDS blogpost which were written on the sleeves of my record. The great cover and sleeve design was done by STEWART DUDLEY while PETER DE GANNES was in charged of illustration and layout. Photography was done by RICHARD DESMARAIS. If you were to look deeply into the album then you'll notice It's like a compilation of songs which the band decided to compile just to finally come up with their first full length album which I think was really successful for them. Well, I'm talking about their country Canada and also here in the Philippines. Who would ever thought that bands like EIGHT SECONDS and the other bands XB, BM , and NU introduced would ever invade this part of ASIA, specifically my country the Philippines.

So where are the band members these days ? Andr�s del Castillo is part owner of R+D Creative which is an audio/video production and multimedia company in Ottawa. Frank Levin was previously involved in the production of Alanis Morrisette's 1991 debut on MCA Records and manages his own studio in Toronto. Scott Milks is still active in Ottawa's music scene with Bigger Than John and is currently an IT manager for the Canadian Government. Mark Parent founded a rock r&b band named Wang Dang Doodle in Montreal in the late 80's and remains active in the Quebec music industry.

I uploaded the Extended Version of "Kiss You (When It's Dangerous)" for you to listen to. This is a Vinyl Rip done by WAVE MASTER of BEE BOP RECORDS for me for my Vinyl Rip collection back in year 2000. Hmmp? Ten years ago!! This version was also included in RETROACTIVE MIXES CD series. I also included the Lyrics just in case you wanna sing.
